I`m currently 12 weeks pregnant. I`ve been to the doctors a few times already. My first visit, they told me I had a urinary track infection and put me on antibiotics. (I had no symptoms what-so ever). So I finished my pills in a week then went to the docs again and they told me it hadn`t gone away. (still no symptoms). Then I get a call yesterday from a nurse telling me I need to come in to get hooked up to a cathadar? She wanted to get a specimen from my urethra she said. I told her no, because I really had no symptoms and all my friends/co-workers said they got UTI`s alot while they were pregnant too. They eneded up putting me on more antibiotics...I`ll see the doc in a week. Is it bad that I declined? (I just didn`t wanna hurt myself or my baby) And do you think my doctors `over-reacting` about a simple, UTI? comments please.

what they are looking for is a sterile specimen from your bladder. They don't want a spec where you pee into a cup as it may be contaminated. HOWEVER, the act of inserting a catheter into you can give you an infection if it isn't done in a completely sterile fashion. BUT if your infection isn't treated, it can travel to your kidneys and cause massive damage. If the person doing the insert is completely competent, it will take about 2-3 minutes to do the insert and take a spec and you will only feel minor discomfort. I'm an RN and can cath someone with my eyes closed- so hopefully the person in your doc's office will be able to do it quickly as well. I would go and let them get the better spec. I had a bladder infection that lasted 3 months once a few years ago. It wasn't while pregnant, but i took 3 courses of antibiotics and nothing helped. Finally I went to a health food store on the advice of a colleague and took an herbal tincture in hot water (like a tea) for a week. The infection was gone in 3 days and never had a problem since. (www.gaiagardens.com) is the store I got it from. However, you would need to ask if its safe during pregnancy as there are a lot of herbal preps that ARE NOT SAFE. I would recommend that you start taking acidophilous supplements to help your body fight this infection. Please also stop and read my VIP page. I have more tips on pregnancy and beyond, I'm an RN and love answering questions (since i'm on my mat leave and not working!).

i don't think they are overreacting. a uti can turn into a kidney infection and premature labor. I've been battling one for over a month now, I have no symptoms as well. The first time i noticed it there was blood in my urine and they said I was close to getting a kidney infection, but after that went away (about 2 or 3 urinations) I had absolutely no symptoms. They told me in pregnant women, there is no burning, the only 'symptom' is frequent urination and c'mon, isn't that a pregnancy symptom??? Just keep a close eye on yourself and i hope it all clears up.

I too got UTI's quite frequently with one of pregnancies. Yes, it does seem rather strange that they wanted to cath you. Did she say why? I would have declined too unless there was some harm to myself or the baby. I had a cath due to an unscheduled ultrasound with this last pregnancy, and it was NOT fun! I was sore for a couple of days due to it. So, I wouldn't get the cath unless there is a REALLY good reason! Good luck and I hope your UTI clears up.

I definitely agree with these ladies here, UTI's while they are common, they are serious business if not treated and a lot of times you don't get symptoms. Antibotics are safe to take while pregnant. They are much safer to take than having a UTI that could possibly turn into a kidney infection. And from what I heard kidney infections are much harder to treat and can put you at risk for so many complications. Please seek treatment when you do go to the doctor, I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you or your baby.

I just came from the hospital 3 days ago. I had a UTI which i didnt know about because i had no symptoms until i had the constant urge to pee. my doctor gave me antibiotics too and i went home. at home i suddenly felt this strong pain on my right side. so i called my doc again and he sent me to the clinic right away. It turned out that my right kidney was bigger than its supposed to be and i was just about to get my kidneys inflamed!! if that really happens it can be dangerous for the baby. but i was lucky and the pain is gone, im slowly recovering.
If the doctor suggests to undergo a certain treatment then i wouldnt reject that. he knows all the risks and doesnt give a suggestion for no reason. An UTI is definately NOT a simple thing. i hope i could help u with my comment. and pls go see the doctor. good luck and take care xx

Actually a UTI isnt just something simple if not treated. They can lead to a kidney infection and cause preterm labor. Its actually not good for the baby. I just went to the er for a UTI this past Saturday. I had symptoms and mine was really bad to where I had some bleeding. Really bad pain and its not fun. Felt like I was about to go into labor. I had actually told the nurse about it at my ob office and she said my urine was fine and I had nothing. The next day is when I had really bad pains and had to go to the er instead and they used a catheter(sp) to collect my urine to get a clean catch and better results. I hear of some ladies not having any symptoms but that doesnt mean its nothing to worry about. Well I hope it clears up for you and take care.

UTIs are quite common, you're right. I had three in my first trimester alone, and one just recently at the end of my second trimester. In the beginning, I was constantly on antibiotics, but, with the recent UTI, I flushed my body with tons of water and it went away. Now, that said, you need to be careful for UTIs because, as you may already know, they can reach the kidney and cause an infection. This can cause preterm labor. Moreover, you'll become quite sick from a kidney infection; it's serious business. So, I think you're right to be on the antibiotics, and you have the right to refuse any kind of treatment that you do not feel necessary. But do your research and ask questions (with your doctor and also others you trust) before you make any decisions so that you feel comfortable with whatever decision you make. And, as a pregnant woman that has experienced many UTIs thus far, I advise you to always drink more than the recommended amount of water daily. Also, straight-up cranberry juice (not the juice cocktail) can help! I hope my answer helped a bit. Take care!
