Hi, I have one of these and mine says suitable from 21 weeks. I hear lots of kicks and stuff on mine but no heartbeat. Obviously, i`m not concerned because I feel the movements just wondered if yours do the same.

Hi,
I bought mine for pleasure really. My little boy likes to listen etc. I hear lots and lots of kicks, so i know it works. It just doesn't pick up the heartbeat. Like I said, i'm not concerned as i feel baby kicking all the time anyway. Was just curious really. My midwife told me she thinks they are all a waste of time and cause unecessary worry for mums to be. - I wouldn't say it was cheap though. I paid £50 for it. I guess this is really cheap considering how much a 'professional' one would cost but i still consider it to be quite costly. Its becuase you can record the sounds onto a CD at the same time. (I dont use this part though so i guess it was a waste of money really).

Based on the time frame you mention for the unit, I would suspect that your doppler wasn't a terribly expensive one... the only ones that are really reliable are the same sort used clinically, and they usually can pick up a heartbeat regularly starting at about 12-14 weeks. They are more expensive to purchase, true, and are not usually available in retail stores because they are supposedly regulated by the FDA to be used under your doctor's supervision. But they are available to rent online; I rent mine from babybeats.com for about $50.00/month and you can purchase them on eBay as well. (Having said that, I wouldn't put much faith in anything you buy at auction for less than $100 or so.) Whether or not spending that much money is worth it to you will be based on why you're trying to hear the heartbeat; with me, it's medical complications, so we monitor the baby closely. If you're just listening for pleasure, bear in mind that a fetal heartbeat can be picked up with a good stethoscope (one with a pediatric "head" on it) from about 20 weeks onward. A decent pediatric steth is, in many cases, cheaper than buying another doppler. Any medical supply shop will be able to hook you up with one of those. (The stethoscope will likely have two "bells" or "heads" on it: one for use with adults, one for use with small children and infants. The salesperson will explain how it works. I know this from years and years of being an EMT riding ambulance.) Cheap dopplers that you can buy retail are almost always a waste of money, but they sure tempt a lot of excited consumers!

I agree, it must depend on the brand. I got one when I was about 14 weeks, and have been able to hear the heartbeat from the first time I tried. As long as you're feeling movements and are able to hear the heartbeat at the doctors office you should be good!

It depends on what type of doppler you have. I bought one from ebay and it works real well. I heard the babys heartbeat at around 15wks.
