Bumper Pads in Cribs? Added: 1284 days ago. Added by: RaisingOurDaughters Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
Hi there, Just wondering what you all think of bumper pads in cribs. In Canada there is big emphasis on not using them for safety(mostly suffocation) yet just about all crib sets come with them(Canada and USA). What are your thoughts? An over reaction or truly a safety concern?

RaisingourDaughter~In Debra's defense, she offered an opinion...isn't that what you asked for? I opened your question because I too have been hearing flip sides of this argument but I was really surprised at how you just insulted and laid into someone for telling you what their own thoughts or experiences were. I've been to Debra's page and to be honest she is not the only person using this site who has written what you call "a manual". I don't understand what you found to be so disrespectful in her answer or if you honestly feel that your response to it was appropriate but I'm feeling about you right now the way you feel about her.

We don't use bumpers. My son has bonked his head on the rails and had his arms and legs go through the rails. Still, he hasn't suffocated- which has apparently happened with some babies. http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/cps-spc/legislation/pol/bumper-bordure-eng.php. I just wanted to show you this link. Babies are crazy and do stuff when you aren't looking. Its hard to watch them all the time. They are so quick. All of a sudden your baby will be able to move on their own. You will come into their room after their nap and find out they have creeped over. OR rolled over, or standing. you can't be every where and if you think you can... you will learn pretty quick you can't and its not something you can blame yourself for. However, keeping extra blankets or bumpers out when they are 0-4 months is a good idea and keeping them out for 4-8 months when they start to stand up and use the bumpers as part of their crib escape plans is even better. Actually, I didn't know this but bumpers are supposed to be out of the crib when they get mobile. I just read that. I have the bumpers in the closet, but never used them and don't miss them either. I think Its just cute baby junk. If you buy some cute crib sheets and a sleeping sack for night time- that seems to be all you will need. That's all we use and i've been very happy!

A TRUE CONCERN! let's jsut put it this way, my brother is a paramedic, he drives ambulance. He wouldn't allow them in his child's crib, and didn't want me to have on either. if you REALLY want to use them, some sites say to weave them in and out between the crib rails, but I still won't.

I plan on using mine, I think its just an over reaction. Just like how lots of places are against walkers...I am sorry if you put your baby in a walker and she rolls down the steps...thats bad parenting...not the products fault. I am using the bumper and a walker.

I used crib and cot bumpers with my son and as long as they are fastened securely and checked regularly there is no problem, i used to check the ties every week to make sure they were still strong and would not fall. Its common sense really do what you feel is best, if you are going to constantly worry about them dont use them. Personally i will use them again i dont see anything wrong with them.....eventually EVERYTHING involving babies will be a no-no, its the over reacting, super cautious world we live in now

It is supposedly a nono, but I use them because I think it is more dangerous not to.

They're becoming of a no-no here too. Having bumper pads, stuffed animals and blankets in babies crib has been associated with SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). I would recomment using them with babies who are big enough to roll over in both directions. Little baby who can only roll in one direction can get stuck and suffocate on the bumper pad. Just because companies sell them doesnt mean they're necessarily safe. I would rather be safe then sorry.

i agree with awqueen1986. if u say the bumpers are dangerous then you can say the crib itself is dangerous because the child could hit their head really hard on the rails of the crib! so either way you go there is always a risk ~ life is full of risks. plus i'm sure you will check on your baby a lot and if they are getting close to the bumper pads move them over.

i say over reaction, what do u think keeps your child from bonking there head on rails of crib while they roll around?
