Dont' give straight water as it can upset their hydration balance in their bodies. I give my son water now, but he's 9 months old and can tolerate it- especially with all the solid foods he eats. The only water you should be giving her would be sterile or filtered water or boiled water (depending on how safe the water is where you live) in the formula you are mixing. and only if the formula you are using calls for water to be used with it.

For the first 6 months of babies life, they can get all their nutrition from breast milk or formula. Unless baby is showing signs of being ready for more nutrition (getting excited when you are eating or not gaining weight properly), then you can start to give baby rice cereal starting around 4 months of age at the earliest. See my VIP page for more on what and when to start solids. I have a link on it to our provincial health page with the nutrition guide on it.

In my experience, babies are only given water when they start dropping feeds down to less per day. I am sure it wouldnt hurt to give sterilised water but unless it is extremely hot and you are concerned about dehydration I wouldnt worry. Ask a professional at your next visit

Most doctors don't recommend it right away unless she is jaundiced. My 2nd son was a little & they recommended water. Otherwise if your baby is gaining too much weight too fast they may recommend it also, but if the doctor doesn't say to then just stick to formula

Babies don't need water at all unless it is very hot and your worried about dehydration, even then most dr's don't recommend it.
