Epidural? Added: 1251 days ago. Added by: Avery123 Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
Can anyone whose had an epidural give me some advice? I had my 1st 3 children without, but my sister-in-law swears by them. Should I give it a try? What was your experience with one?

My epi didnt do to much, it did ease the contractons for a little while, but when it comes time to push they let it ware off. i thought the whole point was to help birthing pain. but nope they let it ware off. So what the heck is the point? Im surely not going to get one with this baby, i think they are deff. over-rated. Im happy with a little dimmeral. oh yeah, Plus putting the catheder thing in hurt like hell too. So pain for pain?? hmm pointless in my opinion.

I was screaming for one lol and it looks worse than it actually is...the only thing i think that happened to me was my back pains became a little more intense when it gets cold or before i start my periods.

i say that you are one hell of a trooper if you had 3 kids with no epidural and i would probably go ahead and do this one to because at least that gives you a little bragging rights.lol. i mean it is what ever you think you should do i had a c section so it of course was not optional but i didnt even like it then i hated not being able to move anything. but i would personally would go ahead and do it without one i mean you have already got 3 down it would seem to me that you are pretty much a pro by now.

I have to say they are the BEST things that were ever invented!! i swear by them aswell but it does depend on how u think u will feel being numb and not being able to feel your legs, some people dont like this feeling and it may freak you out abit? if youve done it 3 times with out you should be fine! labour is sometimes longer with an epidural it slows down contractions, and i do occasionaly get back ache from it 4 years down the line, but im a wimp with pain and couldnt have done without it!

i had one with my first baby, and hated it. they put it in after 23 hours of labor, (i had wanted a meds free birth, but was too tired)once it was in, i didnt feel any relief so i said to the nurse, that it wasnt working, so she turned it up, well this happened many times and they were looking at me like i was nuts, and told me "its up as far as it will go" but i still had no pain relief!! anyway after a while i noticed my back was all wet, the tubing had come out and the fluid was running all down my back. they got it sorted, and it worked too well then, and i couldnt feel anything, the pushing was relatively pain free, but i couldnt feel how hard i was pushing, and ended up tearing and i had to have 27 stitches. my midwife said this is common with epi's, because you cant feel when to stop pushing, and you cant feel how hard t push. the second birth, i had no pain meds at all and by far preferred the experience. i felt more in tune with my body, recovered better afterward, and i got to have a shower right away!! and there was no catheter!!! i loved my med free birth and would definitely choose that way if i have another!

I am SO GLAD I got my epi. I couldnt have lived without it. I dont have any problems what-so-ever in the area where it was done. I have no idea why anyone would want to go natural...i would rather be in no pain (like i was) and enjoy the experience!

I am pregnant for the first time but I plan on going all natural. I have a good friend that had an epidural with her first and she has had some problems in that area of her back ever since. She went natural with her second and she was very thankful. I say if you have already gone natural and can handle it I would do it that way again. But I am a first timer.... Good luck either way!

Well, I have to say I felt NOTHING!!! Even when pushing I had absolutely no idea what the heck was going on down there. So in a sense it was great but at the same time I felt like I had no control over my body. They kept asking me to roll from one side to the other and I literally ended up telling my BF that was his job to do because my mind was telling my body to do it but I just couldn't do it. So weird!!! And for those who were able to sleep, how on earth did you do it? The machines kept buzzing and my blood pressure kept getting checked every 10 minutes. I wish I could have slept. My labor ended up being 12 hours even though my water broke at 8pm(had no contractions at all), got to the hospital at 8:30 and was 8cm when I was checked. The midwife thought I'd be SUPER fast too.

i didnt get one with my daughter. I think about getting one this time but i have seen more than a few people who have gotten them and it slowed down their contractions and they had to have a c section! i am so terrified of that!

TOTALLY swear by them!!!! I was induced, it was a dry labor (no amniotic fluid, which they say is the most painful). I slept up until the point I started pushing, didn't feel a thing, and was walking to my recovery room within a couple of hours. It was the best thing ever, because I was totally aware of what was going on, except I wasn't in any pain, so I could focus completely on my newborn, and watch her and her daddy meet. I'll be duplicating my birth plan!!!

I was induced with our son (born last August) and things were going pretty slow until my Dr. broke my water. Within minutes of that, I was hopping around the room like a lunitic with pain. My exact words to my husband were, "This is STUPID! Why did we do this?!!" hahaha. I asked for the epidural, and from the moment it took effect (around 11 am) until it was time to push (8:45 pm) I didn't feel a thing. Nothing. The only pain I felt was when I was pushing. It was truly amazing. I've also had a natural birth with no epidural... it's night and day.

We're going to have another baby on the 26th of this month (being induced again) and I know already that I'll be asking for the epidural as soon as the contractions start to really kick in. Best of luck, whatever you decide.

mine was great. I had 21 hour labor and it got me thru all my contractions but wore off at the time of pushing. they didnt want to give me more dose bc they said it was going to affect the effectiveness of my pushing as my son was 9lbs. I wouldnt have been able to get thru HOURS AND HOURS of contractions tho without it

i swear by them too! the worst thing ever is contractions and this just takes them all away!! I loved it and would never think of having children with out one after having such a good experience! I still had the urge to push bc the epi only blocks contractions not pressure!! Get one believe me you will be happy you did. I had the chance to sleep and everything!! this next child for you will be a breeze! Why breath threw contractions if you can laugh and sleep!!

Greatest thing ever :) It wore off by the time I delivered so I wasnt numb and had no troubles feeling my contractions to know to push ~ it really helped me labor more comfortably and my delivery more enjoyable.

I had one with my last baby and it didnt help. They tried it twice and I still felt pain. It numbed my legs and some pain from my belly but it hurt down there everytime I got a contraction.
