waking up without pacifier Added: 1245 days ago. Added by: monica9 Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
ahhh. my 4 month old is doing this new thing that she wakes up screaming b/c her pacifier fell out and she cant get back to bed without it. once we put it in her mouth it is less than a second before she falls back to sleep. only thing is she is waking up now every 1/2 hour b/c it falls out. she doesnt know to reach for it again so we are stuck having to go to her room every 1/2 hour to put back in. we arent getting ANY sleep. do i just put it in her mouth to fall asleep and then once shes asleep take it out and make her cry through it? do i just stop the paci all together? i wanted to try letting her cry for 10 min, going in there and rubbing her back, then go back in 15 minutes later, and so on but she screams even more when i come in the room and she continues to cry if i dont put the pacifier in her mouth. we havent let her cry past 10 minutes b/c we feel bad but should we suck it up and try? helpppppp pleasseeee!!

This is going to sound weird, but google wubbanub. It is a paci with a stuffed animal attched. You can put it in and put the animal on thier chest and they can hold it or it can just rest there. It holds the paci in.

Have you tried putting her on your breast, or offering her a bottle instead of the pacifier? Maybe she's crying because she's hungry and is confused by the pacifier. I think you should try offering her breast or bottle next time it happens. Perhaps this way, if she fills up and falls asleep WITHOUT the pacifier at all, she'll be more content to sleep longer. I'd try that. I disagree 100% with letting a 4 month old cry anything out, but you've got to rectify this - and milk could be the answer. I'd be interested to hear how this method goes for you. Good luck. And maybe next baby, you'll try to go things without the paci all together. It worked amazing for us, our son never needed one because he had no idea what one was.

If you have time to read a book, try "Good Night, Sleep Tight" by Kim West. Babies aren't naturally programmed to fall asleep, they have to learn. She has some good pointers that will help from here on out.

I don't know the answer to your Q. But I can promise you this: It _will_ get better. It's so consuming, but then some how they all settle down and grow out of their phases.

wow... that is tough. With my daughter, but she was a little older, we tried to get he to go to sleep without it because to me that seemed easier to break than while she was sleeping. I can tell you it was only rough for about 3 nights. Good luck!
