If the amniotic sav has been torn or compromised, there is a risk of serious uterine infection as well as the actual fluid leak. Monitoring the leak is very important; wear a pad and note how many pads you are soaking over time and if the fluid has a color or is accompanied by blood. Amniotic fluid should not smell like urine. It is also important to note whether or not you are experiencing contractions. Your doctor will be able to run a very simple test right in the office to tell if the fluid is amniotic or not by using a pH paper; matching the color on the paper strip will identify the fluid correctly. If they suspect you have been leaking for long, they may also recommend an ultrasound to measure fluid pockets surrounding the baby. Because the team doing my CVS procedure accidentally tore my amniotic sac in the process, I developed a serious leak of amniotic fluid that I battled for most of my pregnancy. Healing a leak may require bed rest and careful monitoring in order to save a pregnancy, or early delivery,so determining whether or not you are leaking needs to be done as quickly as possible by trained medical personnel and not guesswork at home. Good luck!
