found out my son has a hernia Added: 1225 days ago. Added by: kaybaby Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
I`m really upset... my son is almost 8 weeks old and last night i found this weird lump the size of a loonie, as i was changing Eric diaper at 2 am. It`s just below the belly and just above his penis. Just on the left side, i touched it felt kinda jelly like and it went down as i touched it. I called the helpline and explained what i found they said it might be a hernia! I cried and said is there anything i can do? They said theres not much i can do but just lay him down or give him a bath if he cries... so far he hasn`t had any pain or cry a lot. They said if he throws up, has a fever or is in really bad pain take him to the ER right away. I checked on line and it says they might have to do surgery i am sooo scared! I don`t know what to do i am so scared and upset. I went to the clinic today, they said it is a hernia and they have set me up with a dr tomorrow that can help us out. Has this happened to anyones baby before?

My son got an inguinal hernia when he was about three, which is older than your baby, but still quite upsetting. He required outpatient surgery to make it better, which was really SO simple and so easy. It's a very minor procedure and they didn't even keep him overnight. But not all hernias require surgery; some get better with time. So see your doc and find out what he says, but know that even if your boy needs hernia surgery, it's a very low-key thing to go through. Now by contrast, my husband had an umbilical hernia this summer that he needed surgery to repair, and you've never seen such whining and carrying on in your life, because emotionally men can be such woossy patients. He had the hernia his whole life and his mom chose not to have it fixed when he was small (and when he was too little to play head games with himself over it and freak himself out); so when he had to have it done as an adult it was a psychological trauma that even the doctor thought was funny. So better to do it young :)

Don't worry my nephew had the same thing. He had a quick surgery and everything was fine. He was a baby at the time as well. I think it was harder on my sister than it was on him.

my son had a inguinal hernias on both sides. He was of course about 2 when he had this, but I will assure you. Thank God you caught it now, it could have gotten a lot worse. Good job to you for being so observant! I know it is not easy to say, but your son will be okay. Especially, with a great mom like you. Ask lots of questions and ensure the specialty doctor they refer you to is informative and advises you what to expect both good and bad. My daughter had surgery at 6 weeks old as well. So I understand you being scared. Just pray a lot and and be strong for your son. All will be okay.

dont worry sweetie. i best friend had a hernia when he was a tiny baby. you can still see a small scar (he's in his 20s), but he doesnt remember it & its not painful to him. everything will be just fine. i know its scary thinking about your child may having to have surgery at a young age, (my girl is 6 & may have to have surgery). just be strong & you'll be fine.

most of the men in my family suffer from hernia's- my dad, both brothers and my sister's son has it as well. The older men have had surgery to repair theirs- its now done in day surgery. Simply, they can do it laproscopically and insert a bit of mesh to secure the abdominal wall. The things the help line told you to do are a must- it means that the bowel has come through the hole (hernia) and the blood supply may have gotten cut off to the area. Otherwise, hernias are relatively common and not something to worry about. All of the men in my family have had hernia's since they were babies and never needed to get them repaired until they were in their 20's.

HI!! My 7 yr old daughter had a hernia. I noticed it one day as she was getting out of the tub, it was a lump on her groin. It didn't bother her one bit but the doctor said she should have a repair surgery. She was in and out in a couple hours and took it easy for a week. now she is fine and has a small scar where it was repaired. Honestly, having her tonsils removed was way worse than this was. it will be o.k. :)
