Hi all. DH recorded an infomerical called My baby can read about this supposedly amazing set of books, flashcards and dvds that can teach your baby to read when they`re really young - like under 2 yrs. It looks interesting but it is also expensive and I was wondering if anyone had heard of this and used it and if so, was it successful? Thanks!

But understand what reading is: it is the rapid identification of words within sentences. Reading is compromised of knowledge of phonics, language, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. Phonemic awareness needs to be in place before kids can start learning letter sounds. Kids can memorize what words look like- that is reading, but they need to be able to figure out a word they don't instantly recognize- also part of reading. I don't think it is age appropriate, I don't think it is necessary or will guarantee reading success or worth the money. If you want to teach your kids to read- let me know, and I'll tell you what to do. Start with reading to him or her everyday.

Make up your own flash cards and with words or pictures and show them to your baby over and over and eventually your baby will "know" what the card is or says. Just saved you a couple hundred bucks there!! :)

mommy-at-home - 1153 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) More than likely the babies learn to recognize the books and flashcards but probably wouldn't recognize the same words in a differnet situation. Much like environmental reading: for example, a one year old may recognize words like McDonald's and Pizza Hut when driving down the road, but would not recognize them if they were written on a piece of paper.
