she is 11 weeks old and seems to be hungry all the time. shes just not staying as satisfied between feedings. dr. says to wait till 4-6 months. but i was wondering when other people start, if its okay to start her a little early like 3 or 3 1/2 months.

If you start to supplement her at all, this (to your boobs) is also known as weaning. Your body will naturally make LESS milk- not the idea you want to be going for. She sounds like she is going through a growth spurt. Before you start on infant cereal, babies need to have lost their 'tongue thrust' reflex. That is a protective mechanism to protect them from choking. If you place something in her mouth, like a spoon, does her tongue come out to push it away? if yes, then she's not ready to start eating. the recommendation is that you solely continue to breast feed until 4-6 months- if you can go to 6 months, the better. Babies will tell you when they want to start having solids as well- they get super excited to see you eating and try to get at your food. Feed her on demand and make sure YOU are eating a well balanced diet- whole grains, fruits and veggies, protein and dairy and drinking 8-10 cups of water per day. Your child gets her nutrition from you and if you are skimping on the calories, that means that your breastmilk will not contain the fat and calories she needs. You need to consume an extra 700 calories to breastfeed. If you are an average height and weight= you need about 2,000 calories per day. So you should be eating 2,700 calories if you are breast feeding per day and those should not be empty calories either. If you are eating well, you should find that your daughter will soon be more satified after a feeding as well. If you are eating well and this info is moot, you may need to continue to feed on demand and your milk supply should match her demands and satisfy her within 2-3 days.

NEVER EVER put cereal in a bottle. Thats a huge choking risk. I wouldnt feed her cereal or formula, I would give her breast milk more frequently. She may be going through a growth spurt and need to nurse more frequently. She shouldnt have cereal until closer to 6 mo. of age.

You might try adding and oz or 2 of formula with a bottle of breastmilk to see if that satisfys her. I wouldn't start the cereal too early especially if you dont have an OK from your Dr... the rice cereal doesn't neccissarrily fill them up because its calorie-less. Try mixing formula first and doing things to increase your milk supply.. drink more water.. drink mothers milk tea.. drink 1 beer a day.. feed your baby more frequently.. etc. Those are just a few things you can do to increase your supply.

I was told by both my obgyn and ped that cereal in a bottle is such a choking hazard and not to do it. It can stay in little chunks and then when sucked through the nipple gets inhaled into the throat and therefore baby chokes.

My doctor has had me put a tablespoon per ounce of formula since my son was 4 days old.But that was for acid reflux.

in my opinion, i would not start cereal too soon but try feeding her more often.

They say at LEAST 4 months earlier can cause allergies also rice in bottle is empty calories and can lead to eating more later in life.

oooh this is a very controversial topic in here.... my sil had a large baby and her dr told her she needed to start early, her dd was only 2 and 1/2 months.... what did the dr say when you said she wasn't satisfied in between feedings.
