Kater is absolutely right in that if you count diapers you will know if the baby is eating enough. And don't forget that a full baby is generally a happy baby; most will drift off to sleep happily when full. If in doubt, pediatricians' offices are delighted to weigh the baby for you as often as you like so you can chart growth. A newborn, after it gains its birth weight back, will gain about an ounce a day. I actually weigh my daughter on an accurate postal scale we bought for our business and it works great! Ignore the silliness about stampeding straight for formula!! I've nursed three children with great success and I can honestly say that a nursing mom has nothing to fear but fear itself. You'll be fine! The human species would have died out long ago otherwise. Remember that formula is quite a modern invention :)

Nursing is definitely a challenge initially. It is easy to worry if baby is getting enough because you don't see the bottle and measure ounces. If you trust you body though it is usually fine. If you are nervous I recommend getting the book "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" it is a very informative and encouraging book. It is put out by La Leche League. They also have a website and local groups. They are so encouraging, knowledgeable, and kind. You are also welcome to message me with any que!stions. Getting going with my boy was a challenge, but much easier with my girl. I nursed both for a full year. Good Luck!

firstly, RELAX!! think of all the billions of babys who breastfed and went on to become our forefathers! only 2% of women cant breastfeed, so you have a 98% chance of success. you know the baby is getting enough because they are settled, having 6 or so wet nappies per day, and are growing (although its normal for a baby to loose up to 10 percent of birth weight then gain it back over a few weeks)i wont lie to you, i found it incredibly tough in the beginning, but i had to keep in mind that it wouldn't be that way forever, and it would be much more comfortable in time. i just had made up my mind that i was going to breastfeed no matter what, and i stuck to my guns. there is a great page here-the breastfeeding one, and there is always experienced breast feeders there who will be able to talk you through any difficulty you may have. though you may have no difficulty at all and make me jealous haha! just remember, your body was made to care for a baby, not just during pregnancy, but afterward as well!

Your body knows when to start making milk. For the first 3 days your baby wont even need "real" milk, you make colostrum. Think of the first few days as practice. When your milk comes in.. trust me.. you will know.. You will go from oranges to cantaloupes overnight!! Sometimes, after your milk comes in, and things settle down a bit (meaning you don't feel like a dairy cow), this is when you really start to wonder if everything is going okay. But you will notice you milk let down every time the baby starts to nurse, your boobs get all tingly. If you get REALLY worried take her to a WIC or a LLL center and they will weigh the baby before and after nursing. This will let you know just how much milk your baby is getting :) I breast fed all 3 of my girls and I have one on the way.. So good luck!! P.S. You will be tender after you start nursing. Having that strong of a suction on your nipples is bound to do that. Just hang in there and one day you will notice the ouchies just go away.
