stomach sleeping Added: 1112 days ago. Added by: 2b Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
Anyone putting their baby on their stomach to sleep? My boy is so jumpy I really think he would sleep much better on his stomach. I`m afraid to try it because of SIDS risks but on the other hand that`s what people did for years... what are you guys doing? He is 5 weeks able to lift his head easily and sleeping in our room in his pack and play...

The risk of SIDS is only 1 in 1000. So, of course most of us would be fine if we tummy slept or our babies tummy slept. Approximately 999 of us. I will not risk my baby being that 1. When my son wakes up at night I hug him, tell him I love him, change him and put him back to bed. What good is checking on a baby if when you check they are already gone? I am not trying to come of sounding bitchy or argumentative, but that makes no sense to me. Everyone wants more sleep at night, and my son doesn't sleep so well either, but I don't care if I'm tired, I won't risk it.

What I did was let my daughter sleep on her side while swaddle in between sleep positioners. I would put her on a different side each time she woke up and then she napped on her back. Make sure to alternate sides so they don't get flat spots on their heads. ALso try swaddling before you let them tummy sleep. Why risk it?

When my son is home my mom puts him to sleep on his tummy. she's there next to him tho. she just pats his tummy til he falls asleep. Just think. when we/I were kids parents were told to put babies to sleep on their tummies... and we all turned out fine. :)

When my son was younger, my mom who watches him while I work, would always put him on his stomach. I trusted her to check on him. She said she put all 5 of her kids on their stomachs. I think its more important to not have any blankets in the crib. They also say to reduce the chance of SIDS have a fan running in the baby's room. It keeps the air circulating.

I always slept my newborns on thier backs. I agree with the advice to swaddle her well. Some babies really like to be swaddled. I will say though that once my children could roll they chose to sleep on thier stomachs, I think at that point that it is okay though. I would recommend that you do what makes you comfortable. I always follow the rules, because I think if something happened I wouldn't be able to stop questioning myself. I will say that my son was a very restless and noisy sleeper. We actually moved him down the hall when his noisy nights were keeping us up. They say that most babies and children wake up 6-8 times a night, and it is important for them to learn how to put themselves back to sleep if they do not need anything. I hope that didn't ramble too much. Good Luck.

My son will be 10weeks tomorrow and he has been sleeping on his tummy for the last 8 weeks. He started on his back during his 1st 2 weeks of life but afer that he fussed when I put him down after I had soothed him to sleep. My husband said try him on his tummy...I told him no way I am an ECE and I don't put the babies in the daycare on their tummies. Well I gave into to him and my son sleeps soundly on his tummy. I believe their have been new developments regarding SIDS. It may be a gene they carry that can cause it to happen. I still worry but I am getting better! Good luck!

hun, u kno whats best for ur baby. i put my baby on her belly since she was a week old and she sleeps amazing like that. she'll sleep from 8-12 hours a night. shes a tough chick so i don't worry about sids all that much. plus cadence can lift her head up just fine. try it and see how he does with it. some babies just can't sleep on there backs. hes in ur room so if he stirs at all u'll hear him. i recall a while ago them saying that putting a baby on there back caused it. who really knows these days. like i said, u kno whats best for ur baby.

DD#1 always broke loose from her swaddle b/c she would fling her little arms around so hard . For DD#2 I tried again, but double swaddled. So you wrap the baby snugly once, then right away lay him on another receiving blanket and re-wrap. That holds things in place. I didn't try it w/ DD#1, but this really held DD#2 in, and she slept longer. Some babies are really active! Congratulations on your new baby.

have you tried him on his side with one of those things that keeps them propped up like that? That's how my daughter sleeps and she seems to love it...

It's a personal decision. It isn't as if all babies on their tummies die. It's a very low percentage. I put Ada to nap on her tummy so that her pacifier stays in her mouth. At bedtime, I put her on her back because she sleeps for a longer time on her back.
