Most hospitals try to get you into a hospital gown, and yes, you can have it open in front. I felt strongly that I didn't want to wear one, which surprised them. They pointed out that I could wear my own clothes, but they would get messy and the hospital will only launder *their own gowns*. I wore a cotton knit maternity skirt, no undies, so they could check my cervix, etc. On top I wore one of my husband's old t shirts. Actually, then I went in the tub and when I got out I just wore one of DH's big tshirts and had a blanket or sheet down below. The shirt (XL) was nice and loose, so I just lifted it when they came to put the baby on my chest. You could also mention your modesty to your guests: "I'm going to be glad to have you, but of course I will be busy working hard. Would you please help me feel at ease by paying careful attention to my modesty while you are there?" Yeah, they'll probably try to make little of it by telling you you'll be too busy for modesty, but then you can tell them that it's about your dignity and that you want your wishes to be honored. You certainly deserve that!

The hospital gowns they give u can unsnap in the front so you can hold the baby. I had my friend there and going in I certainly felt very uncomfortable with her seeing anything but once I started to feel the pain and I knew he was coming that was NOT on my mind!

My mother, sister and mother in law were with me for the birth of my second child. I was my little sister's school project... lol. You might feel shy going in, but as has been stated, you want to rip those clothes off eventually. You won't care and neither will your family. They'll have eyes only for the beautiful baby you give birth to.

i wore a hospital gown, and it will unsnap a bit in the front so you can put the baby to your breast and chest skin. once the baby is laying there they wont be able to see. but if they are going to be in there when you give birth, they are bound to see something. and i know you may not believe this now, but at the time you probably wont care. i didnt want my MIL to see ( i didnt care so much about my own mom ) but when the time came i was just like get all of these blankets/clothes off me!! i was so hott and ready for the baby to be out i couldnt have cared if the whole WORLD was there lol. dont get me wrong i wasnt totally naked or anything, but the whole back of my gown was open and i would get up to pee and my whole butt was out the doctor would check me and my vagina would show for a min....normally i would be SOSOSO uncomfortable, but i was in labor with a 9 lb 5 oz baby so that was the ONLY thing on my mind at that moment

Because my water broke before I left for the hospital and leaked more on the way, they put me in a hospital gown when I got to my birthing room. I had the opening in the front which was convenient for putting the baby on me after he was born. They hook you up to monitors so you really need just a robe so they can get at your entire middle easily. I did change in to my own robe after me and my son were cleaned up.

I had a button-up housecoat that I put on. Of course, it didn't stay on. After hours of labor and feeling like I was on fire, that thing came off. If you are in a hospital, the chances are that you will keep your clothes on. I gave birth at home.

I've bought myself some thin cotton nightdresses that have shoe string straps to keep me cool, they are a size or two larger than what I;d normally wear, so they are baggy and I can fit baby in nicely. I'm also taking a few old vest tops from summers gone by as I had some that button half way down - a) so I can change and get a fresh top on and b) they button down far enough that I can have skin-to-skin contact and breast feed once my baby is handed to me.. I know I wont care if I'm completely nekkid if my last labour is anything to go by - you tend to lose whatever inhibitions you'd normally have lol

i suggest a thin button open all the way down night dress you have the option of easy removal if you just think "sod it" during the birth.. but you can keep yourself covered and unbutton it just before delivery. Get a nice baggy one so she can lay in it whilst it is buttoned up. Myself.. i plan to be nekkid lol and i work in my hospital! lol

To be honest, after three days of labor I didn't really care who saw what anymore. So many people had their hands up my snatch nudity was nothing by then. But, to answer your question, I had a c section and wore a gown they just pushed it.
