My baby is 13 months old and i am still exclusively breastfeeding . She eats table food GREAT! Is anyone else still breastfeeding? I get so much negative feedback from my husbands side of the family .My mother in law says that black people are not accepting of long term breastfeeding or really breastfeeding at all. When people find out they look at me like i`m disgusting. Why is it not acccepted? any opinions or comments PLEASE

I nursed my children until they weaned themselves. 13 months is not that old. When you and your daughter are ready then it will happen. Just tell you mother in law, that you understand that she has a different opinion, but that this is a personal choice.

i dont get why she thinks its not acceptable?? she should commend you for b/feediong, i would love to b/feed if i could. why is it down to colour that you shouldnt b/feed? i dont get that all, its like shes being racist against her own race?! weird! my aunt b/feeds and her daughter is 16 months old, she also obv eats proper food, sunday lunches and stuff like that. keep going girl! dont let your mil tell you what to do - if you give up now on b/feeding youll regret it, you do the best for her not for your mil. tell her to keep her nose out and that your the mother not her.

You should also tell your MIL to be proud of her black heritage and that women in Africa nurse their babies and you can too. If it takes one woman to stand up for herself on a bus and demand her rights and that creates change, don't think that a small group of individuals can not create change. Its the one thing that can. By your own example, you can be the best example to other women- therefore creating a new normal.

actually, if you are feeding her any solids, then you aren't technically exclusively breastfeeding. How often are you feeding your baby? I feed my son twice a day- morning and night. He's 15 months old. I've had questions about why I'm still feeding him- and I always respond that the pediatric society of Canada recommends bf until age 2. That usually quiets people down. i don't feed him in public either... just at home. when we are out and about he gets water or milk in a cup ( I can't bf him every day as I work 12 hour shifts 1-2 times a week). He enjoys it, I enjoy it. SO why NOT? My baby, my body. I think though I'll cut him off at age 2- if he still asks for it by that time. Stay strong! It's good for your baby and that's freaking awesome that you are still going!

I think the comments your MIL made are very ignorant and close-minded. To make such a general comment like that she does not speak for an entire race. That is your child you do what you feel is right.

i bf my son until he was 15 months old and only stopped b/c he did. Sadly (exp in the states) bf is not the norm. Where i live in No. VA i would get looks if i was bf my child when he was a newborn. people just expect you to use a bottle. it is sad to me. now iwt my first i only bf for about 4 weeks b/c that was all i could do with him, but it still makes me sad thati stopped so early. I have gotten comments like it is 'gross' or 'seems weird'. To many people have sexualized breasts and have forgotten their org purpose!

I breastfed my first child until she was 23months old and we only stopped because she was ready to. It was her choice and it was a completely painless process. Don't sweat what other people say it is between you and baby! Also I was part of a breastfeeding group and all the black girls in the group used to complain that there mothers, grandmothers, and MIL's would give them a hard time as well. It was believed that the reason behind this might be partly because in thier time people only breastfed because they couldn't afford to buy formula. And so the stigma attached to breastfeeding was that it was what poor people did. We know so much better now- we know that it is what is best for baby... but sometimes old stigma's are hard for older peole to get over. See if you can find a support group in your area it might be helpful!! and just keep doing what feels right to you, it is your time to be the parent and make the choices - not theirs!

my bf's sister still breastfeeds her baby and shes a yr old. nothing wrong with it! she did that with all her kids. and my bf's mom breastfed all her kids for quite some time as well. an my bf's mom is black!!! so0 idk wat ur mil is talking about or y she had to throw race in the mix. that has nothing to do with it. if ur comfortable bfing then do it! theres nothing wrong with it. its not like ur baby is 5 yrs old! jeez. lol and ur baby is prolly healthy as an ox! bfing is the best thing for babies we all know that

Girl if you can do it for that long, I take my hat off to you! Tell those close minded idiots that you are trying to give your daughter the best there is, which is breast milk! I'm going to Breast Feed for as long as I can. Up to about 2 years I think. My mum couldn't BF any of her kids for long and we're all pretty sickly. Catch everything going :(. Mum in Law breastfed all of hers for 2 years or so and none of her kids are sickly. My hubby is pure evil, the 5 of us will be sick and he'll be totally fine. It's so not fair. So look at it this way, you're making sure your daughter will be a very healthy child and adult. Nothing wrong with that! Good on ya!

Hurrah for you for still breastfeeding your little one! It is not accepted because for years formula was considered better for baby than breastfeeding, so moms gave formula and breastfeeding fell out of being the norm.

My daughter is only 4 months, but I will be breastfeeding her for a *minimum* of two years (as recommended by the World Health Organization). My mum BFed me and my bros for three years each. It's not because of race necessarily, it is looked upon negatively in the US, though it is much more common in the rest of the world to BF well through the toddler years.
