My twins are still in the NICU and are now being formula fed. The formula that they are giving the boys has caused them both to have stomach aches. I have asked and asked and asked for them to change the formula. Instead they come up with excuses and refuse to change it! How dare they act like I`m stupid. My first two could only handle good start why should these be any different! What can you do to get the hospital to listen and do what you ask with your kids?? I should have the right to feed my kids what I want them to have!

If they are not on special formula, i would feed them as i pleased... they are YOUR babies, not theirs... i would file a complaint!!

I guess I didn't make part of my point....definitely go to Patient Services. You can even call the operator and ask who you go to w/ complaints as a parent if yours isn't called Patient Services. They are in charge of even the doctors. The doctors and nurses, anyone involved with patient care is employed by Patient Services. They would be your next step up!

that is VERY frustrating. I'm a nurse at a Childrens Hospital and honestly, i've never run into this. We have nutritionists involved w/ almost every kid, and the doctors are very good with working with the nurses and parents to make the best decision for the child. But my hospital prides itself in Family Centered Care, so we believe the parents need to be just as involved in the care of the child as everyone else. I am so sorry to hear this. Now, in defense of the nurses ;) they can't just feed the babies whatever you tell them to because as someone already mentioned, with children, the formula is a Dr. order. If the nurse were to change that, techinically they would be "practicing medicine" and could get into major trouble. However, the nurse should be you and your babys best friend. I'm an advocate for my patients. Is there a nurse you really like or trust?? Have her call the damn doctor and tell him what is going on and that you are very concerned. Heck, I'll page the dr. every time a kid throws up if I think something is wrong! So, get a nurse on your side, ask the doctor: what would be the harm in trying a different formula? Why do you believe this formula is the best for them? List for them the side effects they are having, and tell them you are the parent, you KNOW those kids better than anyone else does. (Again, I can't stress how helpful it is to get a good nurse on your side!! Ask for the charge nurse if need be....they have amazing power with doctors!! And they charge nurse knows how to go to Patient Services to get complaints straightened out!)

Yea we took formula in today and they told us they don't allow parents to bring in their own formula! I was shocked and pissed! These are my babies how dare you tell me what I can't feed them?

The hospital i delivered at only offered Similac or Enfamil. I would bring the formula you want them to be fed and tell them you are paying them to do this and this is what you want them to do. I guess thats what i would do?

I have talked to the doctors. The doctors don't listen! I hate to be ugly about this but it looks as if it will have to get that way before anyone will realize that I play a very active part in my childrens lives even if they are stuck in the NICU. I'm not a parent that just shows up when its time to check out...I'm there everyday and my boys are 4 weeks old! I know them by now and this formula just isn't working for them! I plan to talk to the docs again tomorrow but if that doesn't work I will be going above their heads and someone eventually will listen to me!

You have to talk to the doctors. The nurses can't change it. They do what the doctors order. Voice your concerns to the doctors and most likely they will change it.

My sis had feeding issues with the NICU staff...she ended having a mini breakdown over it and telling them off in some colorful language right there in the NICU! fixed the problem though. lol
