does anyone know what back labor feels like? is it like contractions that come and go or is it constant pain?

It comes and goes with the contractions. It hurts a LOT. I went drug-free, I had my husband press into my back with his fists - really hard - with each intense contraction. It was only like that for about 2 hours before the baby came (and not 2 hours straight, 2 hours worth of regular contractions/transition). It was such an intense shooting pain through my back it made me really nauseous, though I never actually vomited. My labor was very mild for the most part - I stayed home and slept through most of it. It only hurt at the end. :-)

OMG!!! IT HURTS SO BAD, my baby was sunnyside up, and my back hurt so bad....My back hurt the entire time I was in labor, but worse with a contraction. I had to get an EPI, cause I couldn't handle the back pains...

I had back labor, as well, and went all-natural. It's like when you twinge your back: that sharp jolting pain. Back labor is often a sign of mal-alignment of babe and mom's birth canal; sometimes baby is posterior. There are positions mama can take to help baby wiggle around into a less painful pose. We also found that intense pelvic counterpressure helped (someone squeezes the top of your hip bones, which actually opens the lower part of your hips). Best of luck, mama! BUT, I did not have back labor until labor was already well established. My sister, w/ kiddo #1, did all of her early labor in her back... she thought she had pulled a muscle and was taking it "easy" for the whole day (how easy can you take it when you're a daycare teacher?). Turns out she dilated to 7 throughout the day w/o feeling any front contractions!

I was going to go natural with the birth of my son. I had contractions (front) for 3 hours. Then all the sudden back labor hit and I begged for an epidural which I got promptly and it totally took away the pain and I relax and progressed very fast. Back labor is super bad cramping in your lower back, unbearable compaired to regular labor, and it was constant for me until the epidural. Any time you mention back labor to anyone that's had it you'll undoubted get a big reaction about how much it hurts! Take care.
