My son is 6 1/2 months and I was thinking about weaning him soon. What are your opinions and experiences?

My son self-weaned at just shy of a year. My daughter, I weaned by about 14 months. I would wait the first year out. If you don't, you will need to do formula. Plus as they start food, you start eliminating nursings. So by the time my kids were a year it was once in the morning and once at night. Plus after I wean them, I always miss it.

I breastfed all three of my kids (and I'm 37 weeks with #4) until they self-weaned. They were all around 2 years to 2 years 3 months old. After about 18 months, they were only taking a bed time feeding. In my opinion, I'd wait until 12 months like AubreyP said. You can skip formula completely and go straight to milk if you wait til then. Often, if your baby has never had formula, they don't like the switch to it. My SIL exclusively breastfed for 3 months then wanted to give it up because she found it a hassle. Her little guy refused many different formulas, and she went back to breastfeeding- she said seeing him so upset and searching for a formula he would drink was a bigger hassle. I really found self-weaning to be stress free, because when my little ones were ready to give it up, they did. I realize breastfeeding this long isn't for everyone, it's just what worked best for us.

I weaned my son around a couple weeks after my son's 1st birthday. I would start out by doing only 3 feedings for few days, then down to 2, and then down to 1. That way I did not have to experience too much pain from being too engorged. Also my son did not seem to really notice that he was being weaned. Anytime he showed he was ready for milk, I would hurry and have a sippy cup ready with cow's milk for him.

I didn't wean until 12 mos old and by then she was only nursing like 3 times a day so it was really easy to wean. The morning feeding was the last to go b/c my daughter is a grumpy girl in the morning. If you want to start weaning I would suggest just eliminating one feeding and if that goes well like a week later eliminate another feeding (of course replace with formula or if you have pumped milk stored that would even be an easier transition, just put it in the bottle) and slowly replace one feeding at a time. If you do it slowly it will probably be easier on the baby and you. Also if you wait until a year old to wean it is nice b/c your LO can go strait to milk and you can skip the formula. Also my daughter never had a bottle, she went strait to a cup which was nice. Hope all goes well!
