I need major breastfeeding advice! With my last child B/F hurt so bad I pumped exclusively for 12 months..it was a huge pain, this baby I was determined to B/F and not pump, but I have ONE NIPPLE the baby almost refuses. When she does take it she will ONLY take it in the football position and she is sucking the top raw If I lean back she lets go of the latch so I have to start over and stay hunched over. It feels like she is cutting the nipple off with a knife. She takes the other breast with no problems & no pain..but it hurts so bad on the one I am about to give up and go to the pump again and she is only 2 weeks old. Does anyone have any suggestions, advice or have you experienced this before?? I have been using the lanoline and air drying the nipple. Can you please message me on my page? I barely have time to pee let alone check thru all the posts. :-(

I had small nipples which makes it hard for my son to latch on and it hurts also. I used the breast shield for 4 months then weaned him off of it by letting him suck through the shield for 5 minutes then I removed it while my nipple was plumb enough for him to latch on and he would continue to feed with no problem and it was pain free. After 1 day of weaning off, he was able to latch on properly and I continued to breastfeed him till he was 12 months old.

I never experienced that much pain, but it did hurt worse when he only had a small amount of nipple in his mouth. I would go on what wisfarmgirl said and try to get her to open wider. Also, I found it easier when doing the football hold, to have a pillow or a boppy both on my side and on my lap with my knees up....plus many behind my back, to avoid the whole hunching over thing. I was not blessed with big boobies, so I did do the hunching over thing alot!

wisfarmgirl - 1034 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Oh, one more thing, if that side that hurts is too engorged with milk making it hard and thus the nipple too tight for her to latch on, you can express some milk out first so there's ample softness enough to get more nipple in her mouth. PS-I never had luck with the football hold. It's very hard to get all coordinated, so when I figured out the laying down part, I was so comfortable and much happier! Good luck!!

wisfarmgirl - 1034 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I found that if it hurts super bad then they don't have enough of the nipple in their mouth. If you can, try to get your daughter to open her mouth wide by pressing down on her chin a little bit and then getting the most of your nipple in her mouth as you can. Also the most comfortable position for both me and my son was lying down on our side facing each other. The bonus is if/when he fell asleep, I could easily move him without waking him.
