donating plasma while breastfeeding?

I wanted to start donating plasma, but Ive been hearing you can`t do it while breastfeeding because plasma has protein in it which babies need. However, on the biolife website they said you can donate 2-3 times a week because your body reproduces the plasma and protein that is taken away almost right away....so you`d think there would be no harm done, especially if I feed her a bottle around 7 or 8 at night anyway. Would or have any of you went ahead and donated while breastfeeding?

Well, if you're interested in this for general good-deed-doing (rather than to help out a specific friend), perhaps you'd be interested in donating breast milk. there are breast milk banks that, after medical clearance, are happy to accept your breast milk so they can use it to feed at risk babies in NICU's and overseas. Some are for-profit and actually sell your milk, once they fortify it. Others, such as this one (below) are charity organizations: http://www.breastmilkproject.org

Debra - 1927 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) not to mention that you just gave birth! Our canadian health services does not recommend donating blood while pregnant or breastfeeding. I think you have enough on your plate being that you are taking care of a 1 month old, i doubt you have the 2-3 hours of time it takes to donate- not to mention being hooked up to a donation machine for 30 min and feeling weak after for 1-2 weeks while your RBC's get back to normal again.

Wait until you end your breastfeeding relationship. When you donate, whole blood is removed from you. While plasma is rebuilt in 2 days, it takes up to 58 days for your Red blood cell count and hemaglobin to restore itself. Unless you are feeding 2x per day or less (feeding an older baby/ toddler), you need your blood too- especially since you are trying to nourish another human being as well.

wwatters18 - 1927 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i breastfeed and i would not do this while breastfeeding, even if some website said it was okay. youre baby gets the goods first before donating it to give to some stranger. thats my opinion!

canadababy - 1927 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I know that you can't donate blood until 6months PP, according to Canadian Blood Services. I'm sure it's the same for plasma, I haven't seen anything specifically about breastfeeding. I would call my local donation center for their rules but I think after the 6months you're probably in the clear.
