Hello, I have a six week old, and I was just curious how they are typically suppose to be sleeping, Some days she will sleep all day and then like to day, shes been up from 11 to 8 with only sleeping about an hour and a half. She eats every 2-4 hours, as well. And when normally your little ones started sleeping and being up more regularly?

When my son was about 5 weeks, he started staying up longer during the day and becoming more alert. Some days he is lazier then others, meaning he snoozes more. He eats every 3 to 4 hours. Now he is up most of the day with the exception of two to three 45 minute naps. He generally sleeps at night from 9PM to 3AM and 3:30AM to 7AM with a feeding obviously at 3am. He jsut started sleeping like that at night and he is 9 weeks.

Our little guy moved into our bed with us for this very reason. He slept in the day because I was holding him. He fed all night because I would put him in his bassinette. We're a BFing pair, and snoozing with him allowed him to eat at night without totally waking up. After a couple of weeks, I would start to fall asleep after he latched on... it was so restful. NOW, at 8 months, I barely wake up! The ladies just stay out, he rolls over for a sip at Mom's Diner, and we both sleep through the night!

When my twins were born I was crazy worried about forgetting who I fed last, when they last slept, wet diapers, ect. So I made up a chart and took notes on everything they did (I still do!). They are 14 weeks old now, but I took a look at my older notes for you. At six weeks they had really developed a routine. They had been on this schedule for several days before and after 6 weeks of age. They would wake at 9:00am and eat 6oz. Nap from 10:30am-1:00pm. Wake to eat 6oz at 1:00pm. Another nap from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Wake and eat 6oz at 4:00pm. Final nap from 5:00pm-6:30pm. Bath time at 7:00pm. Last 6oz bottle at 7:40pm and in bed by 8:00pm. They would sleep at night until 5:00am, wake to eat a 6oz bottle, and go back down until 9:00am, then we'd start that routine all over again. It was one more week (at seven weeks of age) that they dropped the 5:00am feeding and went straight through 12 hours (8pm-8am). Something to maybe look forward to with your LO! To recap, they took 3 solid naps a day. Two that were 2-2.5 hours long and one that was 1.5 hours long. I made them stay awake in between. They had very awake periods in between the naps and played on a play mat, in bouncy seats, in their swings, and with me. They loved tummy time at this age and did that a lot too. I found real quick that just letting them sleep whenever they wanted was no good. The 1/2 hour cat naps were not letting them acheive REM sleep and rejuvenate themselves. I insisted that they take the fewer, longer naps. They have always been napped in their room in their cribs- this is how they always sleep at night too. It helped to remove them from the distractions of the house and let them know that, when in their room, it's time for sleep, no questions asked. As you can see they were also eating about 30oz per day and their feedings were every 3-4 hours apart. Some people claim that you cannot get a child this young on a strict schedule...hogwash! Totally possible. I did it and as a result had some very content babies, to this day. Babies thrive on consistency and feel safe knowing what's coming next. Good luck to you, I hope I helped give you a comparison!!!
