Some mama's do what's called "relactating" in situations like adoption... So if you're really committed to getting it back, you usually can. But it's like all things that are worthwhile: they're hard! Have you decided to switch to formula and thinking about maybe BFing again in the future? Give me some more details and I may be able to help you a bit more... also, LLLI.org is a great place to look up a local leader, whom you can call 24 hours a day, for free, for advice. If you're TRYING to dry up, she'll even have tips for that, including some herbs you can take (sounds silly, but some are SUPER effective). She'll also have info on how to "relactate" if you make that decision. Are you going in for surgery or a medication where you won't be able to feed for an extended period, but then want to BF again? If so, your best bet is a pump to keep up "some" sort of supply... much easier to BF again if you've never completely "dried up." Much love, Mama! Goonie.

Sorry, forgot to answer the last part of your question! It took about 8 weeks before it was gone for good and I couldn't get it back. It was dropplets by then, but I probably still could have stimulated it out.

I didn't breastfeed, so toward the end of my pregnany and after giving brith I wore a tight sports bra (24 hours a day) and did other things like- ice packs, avoided breast stimulation, showered with a bra on, didn't let hot water hit my breasts, and cabbage leaves. It took about 3-4 days for the majority of my milk to go away. By this I mean the gushing and leaking phase. I still had a little remaining for several weeks thereafter(I had twins though). However, not to the point where I was leaking though. A little tissue in my bra soaked it up just fine. Then it disappeared alltogether. If you have a particularly hard time getting it to leave, you can take Sudafed or anything else with ephedrine in it. Ephedrine dries up liquids in the body (snotty noses), including breast milk.
