I had a membrane sweep at 7 days over due and 48 hours later my water broke and 10 hours later my son was born. It is very uncomfortable for the 15-30 seconds that the doctor is doing it and afterwards you might have some period type cramping, but otherwise its not bad. I recommend it if your over due. I was 90% effaced and 1.5cm dilated before the procedure.

To those who answer, were you dilated/effaced when they swept you? If so, how much?

Yes, had it done twice. Once at 39 weeks then again at 39 weeks 5 days.... still went overdue and was induced due to high bloodpressure at 40 weeks 1 day. didn't work for me i guess, just caused some braxton hicks contractions.

I had it done twice. The first time I lost my plug and ended up with lots of cramping. Nothing else. The second time I just got all the cramping. I was induced a week later with Cervidil.

Didn't work for me :) I kept having contractions but wasn't dialating. I had the procedure at 9am friday (after contracting for 6hours but not dialating), at 10am the next day the dr broke my water and at 3pm they gave me pitocin, finally had my baby at 9pm after 42hours of labour. IMO it didn't work (for me, it worked one out of 3 times for a girlfriend)

I had it done 5 times and I still was almost 12 days overdue and had to be induced. I really believe it has to do with the size of your baby because I've only heard of it working for people that had smaller babies [under 8 lbs]

I had it done and it did not do anything. I was induced a couple weeks later.
