mckrush - It is you and people like you with this type of ignorance to the virus that is causing so many problems. The H1N1 virus is like any other flu. The normal stomach bug kills hundreds of people a year. The H1N1 virus can not be contracted by eating pigs. It is a respiratory virus. Eating pork or drinking pigs milk will not cause the virus as you seem to think it will unless you decide to eat pig lungs which I doubt very many people do anyway. Also there has only been one case of H1N1 found actually IN PIGS. Protect your child the way you would from any other virus. Wash your hands, keep them away from heavily populated areas such as malls and parks and make sure you make everyone visiting your baby wash their hands as well. You shouldn't be any more worried about the "swine" flu than any other virus. All are equally risky

I'd love to say that breastfeeding will protect your child from all illness- but in my experience that is false. I noticed his colds are shorter now- but he's been sick all winter and last winter too and I still am breastfeeding him at 18 months. H1N1 (lets call it by its proper name since you don't catch it from pigs), is a flu virus. The flu virus in general kills thousands of people every year- and generally those with weaker immune systems (old and young, immune deficiencies first). In order to protect your child- you should handwash yourself and your family. Avoid letting him lick things that you know aren't clean- such as floors, doors, buggy carts etc. When you come home from going outside, wash your hands. Wash your babies hands before he eats, and when you come back from an outing. I would also advise against going to mass children meeting areas- such as baby gyms that are basically petri dishes (the last time we went he came back with a stomach virus and sinus infection. It was horrific). Playgrounds are a better option as they are outdoors and should get covered in dirt and washed by the rain. Make sure your child gets immunized for diseases as well ( i know this will cause a stink with some people) but I'm an RN and must promote immunization as it has irradicated diseases such as small pox. Now these diseases are mutating and getting stronger such as the H1N1 virus is doing and these diseases will become a problem if immunization does not occur. The only way diseases can become irradicated is if the population participates in immunization programs.

dont worry about it. so many more people have died from REGULAR flu this year than from swine flu! its just a lot of paranoia. do what you normally would, wash your hands, disinfect things regularly, etc

I agree with diane-taketwo....the media has way blown this out of proportion. Sure, it's a serious illness but no more serious than influenza that affects way more people every year. I've had 2 pts. hospitalized w/ influenza this year....none w/ swine flu. It's just a different strain of influenza. Take your standard precaution (hand washing, etc) and you will be fine.

dont take it to mexico, dont let it drink pigs milk, do NOT let your baby go near anyone or anything that looks like it might be the spawn of a half human half pig thats how this whole thing got started like AIDS did when humans tried to breed with monkeys.....

The same way you protect from any flu. Swine flu is no more contageous or dangerous than any other flu virus out there, especially outside Mexico. Just make sure anyone touching baby has clean hands, keep your child's toys just for your child, don't let other kids play with them, or if they do, wash them down before letting your child play with them again. Make sure baby is getting vitamin D, especially if you are breast feeding you'll need to add vitamin D drops. Clean baby's hands as they go in the mouth often, and are the biggest source of getting the virus transmitted. You don't need to scrub or wash them 20 times a day, perhaps just after feeding times. Keep your distance from people who have a cough or cold - it's likely not swine flu, but if your little one gets sick with one virus it makes it easier to come down with another. Try not to panic over 'swine flu' - the media has really blown this out of proportion! Even if you/baby were to get sick from this (or any flu) the treatment is readily available and the recovery rate is very high. People who have passed away from the swine flu all had serious underlying medical conditions that amplified the flu's effect.

Breast feed him/her. Your mature immune system begins producing antibodies once you become exposed to an illness, regardless of whether you "catch" the bug or not. You will be feeding those antibodies to your baby before you even begin to show symptoms. You wouldn't believe the disgusting bugs that ripped through our household this winter. If I wasn't sick myself, I was cleaning up after someone else's messes. My newborn never even got a sniffle.
