My 13 month old is bashing her head into doors, windows, the floor or smacks herself in the head over and over with her hands whenever she is angry. I hear it is normal but it is really frightening to see her do it. Anyone with a headbanger? how did you deal with it? Did the phase pass?

daydays mom - 995 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my daughter does the SAME thing. but sometimes its just because. shes doesnt have to be mad i think she just likes to do it.

M2G - 995 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Completely normal. You just have to ignore the behaviour - as hard as that can be. My oldest went through it and it passed about a month later. Once I stopped acknowleding it she stopped doing it.

When he lost his temper he used to try and cry if he couldn't he would bang his head to make sure he got real tears. In the end I would ignore him, I would literally just walk off. He still does it now and again, but I don't give him the reaction he is looking for. It is horrible to watch incase they really do hurt themselves, but it does pass.

Just ignore your child, but try to keep them safe at the same time (watch objects around them and try to keep them on carpets instead of bare floors around the times that they typically get upset.)

athenaB1984 - 995 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my little girl;does it occassionaly too. She is 17 months old. I think she does it to get a reaction out of us. Once I tell her to stop, or make a big deal she does it even more. So I learned to turn my head or not give in and pay attention to it, and she stops right away because I am not giving her the attention she wants..same thing goes when she screams her head off. The more I say no, the more she does it.

emma32uk - 995 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my son did it so does my sisters little boy. my son did stop eventually, i just had to distract him quickly when he started otherwise he had red lumps on his head, i think its pure frustration!!!!

RobinG - 995 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) My son is but he is mildly autistic so it is very hard to stop him. When he starts I do my best to calm him or redirect before he gets to the object of choice. If there is no stopping maneuver around so she goes to something soft. Or place your hand down for example on floor so she hits your hand instead. I say no firmly and try to be one step aeahd of him so I can see it coming. It is a phase for many so you are def not alone. They do it out of frustration so best to try to find out why she is mad or upset so youcan help her. He will also use his own hands ot smack himself inthe head. Communicating needs and not being understood is often a cause and being told no. If you see other reasons for concern like obvois delays etc consult your doctor to be sure there isnt more to it. Which is the case for some, NOT all so dont be alamred (())
