Extreme Reflux! Added: 992 days ago. Added by: mother649808 Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
My preemie son obviously has an extreme case of reflux. I have watched him turn blue on more than one occasion due to him choking on his vomit! At first the doc said to add cereal so we did! Didn`t work! Next he starts him on prevacid says do that and only 1 oz every 2 hours! Didn`t work! Now they have changed his formula to Enfamil A R Lipil and since the change all he`s done is scream! He`s only quiet when I hold him skin to skin, tummy to tummy! Has anyone had luck with this formula? He`s 2 and a half months old and still only weighs 5 pounds! I`m so worried about him and he`s SO hungry!!!

If you are for sure that it is reflux....then you don't have to listen to me, but my when my son was one month old, he was projectile vomiting everything he ate, pretty much all the time. After talking to nurses (and them telling me it was reflux), we actually found out from the doctor that he had a digestive condition called "pyloric stenosis". It is when the muscle at the end of the stomach enlarges, therefore it doesn't let the food pass, causing the milk to be vomited up. If you look it up on the internet, it will tell you the symptoms...I just wanted you to know about this just in case....like I said, all the nurses said to switch from breastfeeding to different formulas because of reflux and nothing worked. I went with my instinct that something wasn't right, and luckily the doctor diagnosed it! right!

Thanks girls! It sounds like soy is our next step. He was back at the doc yesterday and that when they changed him to the AR and she said next they would do an upper GI.

My son was vomiting every time he ate and in between ALL THE TIME when he was little. My doctor told me to switch to soy and it stopped it almost right away. Now he barely threw ups at all. Maybe you should give that a try. if nothing else is working. We use isomil and love it!!! I hope you figure out whats wrong with your little guy

The little girl I nanny for had really bad relux, to the point of changing her maybe 5 times a day and going through maybe 7 bibs plus burp cloths each day. It was awful! She was on the A.R plus a tbls of rice cereal per oz of formula. It was seriously the thickest thing I have ever seen. It still didn't help. The prevacid is the only thing that helped until she was eating more solid food which she was able to keep down. Did the dr tell you it takes 2 weeks for the prevacid to fully work? I could tell in 1 day if the mom had not given her her meds. I would take him to the hospital and get some answers. They can also put the dye down his tummy to make sure everything is ok. Good luck!

Oh, yes I also second Robin on the ready made. That made a HUGE difference. Also, I use the Playtex bottles with liners and push all the air out before giving her the bottle. Also, when he seems to have gas bicycle his legs it helps get the gas out!

Have you tried soy? (I would also use ready made to reduce the bubbles) Maybe he is also lactose intolerant. ((())) hugs, I would def go back to ER ~

I would take him back to the hospital, it's not ok to turn blue! What if he did that in his sleep? I would DEMAND they do something.. my daugter also has very bad reflux. We use Isomil now (soy formula) She didn't gain ANY weight in 2 months, we switched to soy and she gained 2 lbs in 2 weeks! We also keep her sitting up afterwards and burp her for at least 15 minutes, it helps SOO much.

We thought maybe the same thing. He was fine in the nicu and Similac special care then the day before they send him home they switched him to neosure! The day he came home was his first episode of turning blue! I really wish they would have changed his formula there so we would have known how he was gonna tolerate this!
