It breaks my heart every time we go to doc`s for a shot. Jaina lays on the table, just as happy as can be, smiling and kicking and then wham! her little face scrunches up and turns red right before she lets out a loud scream. Has anyone found a way to disract a baby from the pain. I was thinking if the nurse would let me bf while she gave the shot that might soothe her, has anyone tried this? Or have any other suggestions?

meecob - 987 days ago Thanks for all the comments :) We went to doc's yesterday and, at the nurse's suggestion, I nuzzled her cheek/neck as she got the shot...she didn't even cry!! I'm so proud of her. THanks again ladies - have a great day

tamm - 989 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) the nurse gave my baby his shot after laying him down on the exam table; it was over really fast, baby cried a little but was easily soothed. it was very mild in comparison to, say, today when i was trying to change his poopy diaper and he screamed and carried on like i was killing him. don't feel bad mommy! not sure how old she is, but she won't even remember, i'm sure :-) the bell-ringing is a good idea though!

jaydsmom - 989 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Here (in Canada) we are the ones to hold the baby during the shots. Baby sits on your knee so you can cuddle them through the whole thing. I had my daughter 7 years ago in a totally different part of the country and it was the same. With my son at the last appt, the nurse rang a bell just as she did the shot and he was so distracted by the bell that he barely cried.

courtenay - 989 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) here its recommended to nurse AFTER the shots, one of the reasons is nursing is a comfort, but personally i dont think you should nurse during the shot, that is not somethingf you want associated with pain

krystiannoah - 989 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i dont breastfeed, but i asked if i could hold my son and feed him when he was going to get his, and my ped said that theres a chance he could choke on his formula because he will start to cry while eating..so i was like..eh whatever...but he's doesnt cry after i pick him up..the onyl thing i dont like about the shots is having to hold his arms and legs down, it makes me feel so guilty.but i know its needed, so its not too big of a deal for me anymore.

mariettap - 989 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) 7 yrs ago my pediatrician said there was a study showing babies cry less if receiving shots while breastfeeding, and he even suggested I do so. Now, same doc's office, the nurses put my baby on the exam table and give her back screaming when they're done. It's about liability. Last time the nurse told me the concern is that there could be a needle stick--what if the baby flinches and the needle hits mom? They can control things better if it's just the nurse and the baby. I do know someone who did not hold hertoddler firmly enough for the nurse--He flinched and the needle jabbed the nurse and the boy. Bloods mixed, and then they had to start worrying about who might have a communicable disease to share with whom... I still wish I could hold my baby durine vaccines though :(
