I agree with happytobemom. I think breastmilk or formula during the day is still important to keep baby hydrated. I give my son water from a sippy cup also. Fruits, veggies, cereal, yogurt, soft plain pasta, cheese bits. Nothing processed or sugary. IMO their little bodies are too young to be filling with high fat/sugary/processed foods. I am a bit of a health nut, so that is just my opinion. I think maybe the shock comes from foods like ravioli, french fries, burgers or mac and cheese if it's the KD type, popsicles etc. Those IMO are not whole foods.

I am a dietician. When I read some of what people are feeding their little babies, I understand why we have a childhood obesity problem in the US. Appropriate foods for a 7 month old are fruits and veggies - but cut up very small or mashed or from a jar with no sugar added, baby cereal (but even whole grain cheerios), formula - can be in a sippy cup not just a bottle, finely chopped chicken, cheese, yogurt. Egg whites are a no no for allergies before 1 year old, but cooked mashed egg yolks are fine. Healthy foods!! If you start your babies on the right track now, they are more likely to have a lifetime of healthy eating habits.

my daughter is 8 months old. she loves to chew on toast, waffles, strawberries, string cheese, breadsticks, apples. you need to be very careful with them chewing on these foods though, i have to stay very on top of my daughter so she doesn't get chunks bit off that she cant chew or swallow. she loves to play and chew on food and i enjoy her being able to enjoy new foods but you just have to be careful they dont choke. dont give them food and then walk away. my daughter also loves Yo Baby yogurt (any yogurt actually-but i started buying the yo baby kind) and she also loves mashed potatoes, ice cream and popsickles! trying new food is the funnest!

I live with a pediatrician and he would flip out if he saw what some 7 months were eating! Wow, that's all I have to say.

As long as the portion size is safe, a 7 month old can eat just about anything. I wouldn't give one a lot of beef cause it's hard to digest and stay away from chips because of the choking hazard. Anything else is fine in moderation. Just continue to make sure they still get formula.

my daughter eats what i eat, in small pieces. she was never big on purees and i never used jarred baby foods but since she is big on feeding herself she likes things in pieces.

My 7 month old eats what we eat. Tonight she had couscous topped with tomatoes/mushrooms/peas/seitan/peppers and some french bread. She eats (or at least tastes/sucks on) anything that we offer her. She's primarily breastfed, but shares in the meal at dinnertime. I've never pureed foods for her or even chopped them up tiny, or given her baby food or cereal. So far she really loves blackberries, peaches, peppers, bread, bananas, and cucumber. Try a variety of foods, it's fun and tasty!

some specific examples of 'real' food he has had are mashed potatoes, spaghetti, chicken noodles (w/o the chicken), pieces of fruit, small bites of cheese or bread

my 7 month is formula fed (enfamil gentlease) and eats cereal mixed with fruit for breakfast. he eats all stage 1 and 2 baby foods EXCEPT meat (he hates it). so for lunch will have 1 or 2 containers of baby food and the same for supper. also he ALWAYS wants to eat when we are eating, so i take whatever we are eating (as long as its not bad like spicy or too much sugar)and put some in his mesh food feeder and let him suck on that or else give it to him in TINY pieces (pinky nail sized)
