How do I go about getting a midwife? Added: 160 days ago. Added by: athenaB1984 Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
My husband is military, and we have Tri-Care insurance. I am just curious for my next pregnancy, how do I go about getting a doula, midwife...have a water or home birth? Do you just request these things at your hospital? I have limited choices being as we`re in the military..we do what they want us to do. But is there like a `locate a midwife` website? or stuff like that? does insurance cover it or do you pay out of pocket for births that are not `typical` hospital births by a doctor?

get in touch with your gp and make sure they are aware that you are pregnant

I'm at Fort Campbell, KY.. and the army hospital here had both midwives and OB's.. they let me have the choice of either. But honestly I didn't have such a great experience with my hospital so my next pregnancy I will be requesting to be seen at a civilian hospital. First, you should call the hospital and ask exactly what type of births are offered. My hospital actually did water births but it's a pretty big hospital so I'm not sure all military hospitals offer that option. If they don't then take yourself to the Tricare office and explain your situation. They can switch your coverage to be seen at a different hospital but keep all other dependents on Prime if your husband and other children (if you have any) can still be seen on post. This switch should only cover you, your pregnancy, and the 6 weeks after birth. Sometimes you might be required to pay a co-pay but it won't be alot of $. My friend who is currently being seen off post doesn't pay anything extra because it's considered a "Referral" rather than a switch from Tricare prime to Tricare standard. Make sense? But I don't know what branch of service your DH is in, your area, or hospital standards. Just talk to someone and they'll usually point you in the right direction... You don't have to put up with any type of birth just because THEY have limited options. There's always away around what the military standards are.. Trust me, if you complain enough you'll get your way. lol.. I use to be enlisted and worked in the hospital pharmacy so I know what I'm talking about. Msg me if you have other questions.
