What can I do for my breastfed 3 week old? he seems to be contipated (his poop is still watery though) but he has to really push to get it out and he gets very fussy and has really big farts. it has been like this for the past 2 weeks, wondering if he has a problem with my milk or something. but it really bothers him, and it makes him cry alot, and it is hard on me too. so since i am breastfeeding... what is there that i can do?

julieandbaby - 967 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) About the gas, my baby was very been gassy from birth till recently and I tried just about everything (drops, gripe water, etc.). He had trouble passing gas and I had to help him by playing with his legs. He was very fussy. I also tried to change my diet but it didn't make any real difference. Now he's 4 months old and he is able to pass gass by himself and he rarely cries. So I think that time will help your son and he will eventually become less gassy and less fussy as he grows. Good luck !

If he's farting and fussing its probably coz he's swollowing too much air and not being burped enough and if it doesn't come out the mouth it has to come out the...and it hurts and annoys him. Try burping him heaps through feeds (even if he doesnt want to!) At 3 wks I burped my bottle fed baby every 30 mls. Once I worked out that I had to burp till my arm was sore (It was my third baby and I finally got it!) after two days I had a perfect baby that didn't cry, fart or fuss. Hope it all goes well.

Your baby is not constipated...your baby just has to learn how to poop! The gas could be something you are eating but it could also not be. Try giving him simethicone drops (Mylicon/My Little Tummy)for the gas.

chrissy-511 - 968 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) it sounds like it's just something you are eating is giving him gas like everyone else said..

happyforest - 968 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my doctor said its the consistency of the poop that determines constipation, not how long its been since they have gone or if they struggle to go or fart, and since it is still watery, he isnt constipated. Forest was formula fed, but he also struggled to poop for the first few weeks. it is normal, their body isnt used to doing that yet, and it has to kinda catch on.

Karenlouise - 968 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) This may sound really silly but are you giving him water to drink too. You see my first child for the first 2 weeks he was in hospital so when I took him home I thought that my milk was all he needed then one day my mum said are you giving him water to drink as well as your milk I felt like such an idiot and so awful. If you are giving him water just put a little sugar in it and that should help with the constipation x

meecob - 968 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) To go along with Jaydsmom, I had to cut eggs from my diet for the same reason. There is a natural laxative in breastmilk - so you are probably dealing with just gas problems. http://digestive-disorders.health-cares.net/infant-constipation.php Besides cutting certain foods from your diet; you can also try a gentle tummy massage - start at his belly button and circle in a clockwise motion around it slowing getting bigger circles - this will help move that air & bowels around the intestines. Good Luck & congrats on your beautiful baby!

jaydsmom - 968 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) My son was like that, so I had to cut out all dairy from my diet. I also had to avoid foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, most anything to do with a salad, and definitely garlic. When I did this he was a much happier baby.

krystiannoah - 969 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i dont breast feed, but my sister in law does, and i know her daughter gets like this whenever she eats spicy food... it could be what you're eating that is giving him the gas(btw,my son has bad gas as well...but somehow he manages to get it all out to go poop lol, and he is usually always constipated) so i give him some prune juice sometimes to help.
