I had my son's toungue clipped when he was about 2 weeks old. It wasn't that bad, but I didn't want to wait to find out if he would have a speech impediment (sp?) when he was older. My co-worker's daughter had a speech impediment when she was three because she was toungue-tied. She had to be put under because she wasn't young enough to just have a simple clipping of the toungue. I was NOT about to have my son be put under!!! The procedure was way worth it to me! Like Sarahann said, its simple and he only cried for 5 seconds...not bad at all!

I noticed my baby's tongue from the moment she was born, but being my first baby I thought that must be what all newborn's tongues look like. No one at the hospital told me she had a tongue-tie. The week we got home from hospital I was visited by a babycare nurse who looked at my daughter and told me she was tongue-tied. I couldn't believe no one had told me. I was refered to a specialist who told me that it should definitely be corrected, otherwise it may cause feeding, speech and dental hygeine problems. Also I was told she may be teased as a kid if she can't do simple things like stick her tongue out and lick an ice cream. I ended up getting my daughter's tongue fixed at just a few weeks of age, I think I was told not to leave it more than six weeks because then it becomes more difficult. All it involved was a tiny snip which literally took a couple of seconds. It didn't bleed and she only cried for a minute if that. There were no problems afterwards and breastfeeding improved. I'm glad I got it done, because now she sticks her tongue out and pulls all sorts of expressions which she couldn't have otherwise. It isn't always a problem, but I didn't want to take the risk. I wanted to fix it while she was young enough not to know what was going on.

they told me my son had tounge tie when he was just 4 or 5 days old. I went to a specialist about it but he suggested that we wait till he starts talking to see if its a problem. If the baby can eat properly its no harm, it usually stretches by the time they talk
