This is a mini novel but it is a complicated story as well as this is a complicated decision. Mine was a really bad experience. But you wanted to hear the pros and the cons. I fully believe there are more women with good experiences than bad with the mirena but it is important to be fully educated about this product before having it inserted into your body. Google it because there are message boards devoted to women's experiences with it. I have 1 or 2 women email me every month about their own negative experiences regarding the mirena in response to something I posted last summer on a message board and it breaks my heart. I wish you luck with whatever choice you make. I had the IUD inserted in September of 2006 at my 6 week postpartum checkup following the birth of my third daughter. I had all uncomplicated pregnancies and births. Never had a miscarriage or cysts or any other problems. It hurt so bad when they inserted it. They did warn me to take ibuprofen and I did but it didn't touch the pain but I think it depends on the woman. The cramping was strong and lasted a couple of days afterward. But everyone is different. If you do decide to have it just make sure you take something before having it done. After that I was breastfeeding so I'm not sure if some of the symptoms were from that. I had no sex drive, the strings attached to the IUD stabbed my hubby every time we had sex (they are suppose to soften up but after 2 years mine never did). I was tired all the time, I had bad headaches, at first I lost weight from breastfeeding but when I stopped breastfeeding I put on an extra 10 pounds that never came off. I was bitchy, but my periods were super light and I had less cramps. There was quite a few times that I said I wanted it taken out but I always decided not too because I didn't want to get pregnant and I wasn't positive if the symptoms were caused by the mirena. It was nice not to have to worry about getting pregnant and the ease of the product was wonderful so I could put up with the symptoms. But in July of last year I started having pregnancy symptoms. Heartburn, nausea, my boobs felt bigger and sore, and I was bloated. i bought a hpt at walmart and it turned positive immediately! I was in shock and I was having stomach cramps so we decided to go to the ER because I had no idea how far along I was (my periods were not regular) and with the IUD you have a high chance of ectopic pregnancy. So we went and their test came back positive also. The hcg levels made it seem like I was 5-7 weeks pregnant but they couldn't find a sac on the ultrasound so they thought maybe 5 weeks but they did see that my IUD was still in place and they found a huge cyst on my right ovary that was most likely causing the pain (which was caused by the mirena). They decided to remove the IUD and I had read the warning that it may cause a miscarriage to have it removed and sure enough it did just as we were getting excited about the pregnancy. The miscarriage was painful and emotionally traumatizing. But it made us decide we wanted to have another baby so we started TTC right away again. We conceived the following month but sadly had another miscarriage which really screwed me up because I had never had problems before. Finally though in October of last year we conceived again and i just gave birth to a healthy beautiful baby girl 4 days ago. I do notice that my cervix was a lot more sensitive and I am a lot more crampy now which i think has to do with the mirena. But my story has a happy ending. I however hate what the mirena did to me and I personally don't recommend it to anyone. I fell into the 1% category(however I think that percentage is high when you start reading how many women have gotten pregnant on it)but it doesn't mean you will. Sorry this is sooooo long. Anyways good luck to you.

I have the Mirena IUD also. My dr got me to take 2 Motrin an hour before coming in, and I barely felt it going in. There was one little pain that felt like a PAP. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! I bled on an off for about a week after getting it, and now 6 months later if I get a period it lasts about 2 days and is so light I can just use pantyliners. No weight gain, no more period cramps, and no dumb pills to take. I don't think I will ever go to another BC method again.

Okay, I have the mirena iud. It was VERY painful when inserted and I bled for 2 months straight I believe. I HATED IT. I said if it continued I was getting it removed. But, it stopped! Now I have spotting every once in awhile and I've had it in since March 5th. The spotting is very light when I have it too. Nothing like a real period. But, at first it was pretty bad. I'm actually liking it now and glad I had it inserted so far. But, I'm like you. The pills are for the birds. I forget to take them.
