my son will be 6 months soon and he is still eating about 42-50oz a day....he seems like he is always eating...is this normal for his age? or should i be concerned? i try to give him solids and he has no interest in them, so i dont know what else to do to help him get filled up more so he isnt eating as much, i do put a little bit of rice in his bottle and mix it in really good, but it doesnt seem to help at all....any suggestions?? he also isnt a `fat` baby either, he`s tall and lanky lol...so i dont know where all this food is going.

Debra - 125 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) after your baby is 9-12 months, offer solid foods BEFORE breast or formula feeding. Right now, you should offer food AFTER formula. if you are thinking he is drinking too much, just give him a portion of what you would normally give him ie. 5oz instead of 8oz and then sit him in a chair and offer him the cereal.

Debra - 125 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Is he interested in solids? A way to know is 1. Getting excited to see you eat, reaching for your food. 2. When you offer him a spoon, he doesn't automatically thrust his tongue out at the offering. If he hasn't lost this infant reflex, he's not ready to start on solids yet and you should continue offering him whatever fluids you are currently providing for him. The amount of formula or breastmilk a baby needs from 6-9 months is about 24-32 oz a day. As your baby eats more solids, he will gradually drink less fluids. You don't need to start with pureed foods either, your baby can enjoy mashed and finger foods before teeth appear. If he is able to sit up and is putting his fingers, objects into his mouth, try making him some oat cereal and letting him play with it. It will be messy, but he'll have fun. My boy is skinny too, and at 19 months, he eats almost as much as I do- especially for breakfast and lunch! A great toddler guide to nutrition: http://www.hls.gov.bc.ca/children/initiatives/toddler.html click on the link to 'healthy eating for your toddler' It gives fluid guides to how much milk/formula is needed at which age, ideas for finger foods and guides for how much, what quality of food you should be providing for your baby. At this point, eating is about fun. Things you offer should be nutritious. Cheerios, bananas, blueberries etc are all great starter foods (after 6 months).

You just put the food in it and the suck it right out just like a bottle. Maybe that will at least get your LO used to the taste of different baby foods then in a few weeks try again. Also feed the food first then give him a bottle of formula. You will notice that he will start to take less formula after each feeding! The baby food bottles in our walmart are located next to the sippy cups and spoons. Hope this helps!

Consolation: My 7 month old isn't interested in food either. Purses her lips, smacks at the spoon, grabs it and yanks it out of my hand then throws it down. Kind of funny, now that I'm not bathing in it. hmm. Anyway, it's all temporary. Our babies are healthy. They'll get where they're going in time.

RobinG - 127 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Recommended oz per day for 6 months is 24-32 oz. Mine ate up to about 36-38 at times. what is his feeding schedule?

RobinG - 127 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) At 6 months there is no reason to give cereal in the bottle, Feed it on a spoon. :) Also feed it prior to bottle feedin if you wish to reduce milk intake. Cereal in a bottle is for babies who are to young to learn to spoon feed. (3 months and younger) I would try things to hold him off a bit longer between feeds if you feel he is eating to much. Like when he begins fussing pull out a toy, play a game with him, go for a walk or ride etc etc. try to get him to go an added half hour before eating. Is your doc concerned? If not then no reason to be, if your doc is then try to spread feedings further apart a bit so total for day is reduced slightly :) Maybe reduce an oz in each bottle and after he is done give him 30 mins to digest to see if he is fine. If he is still fussing for more then leave the added oz.

Cindie - 128 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Yep, it's normal! Try to mix more rice cereal in. I put my rice cereal into an empty formula can w/a scoop and I mix in 1 scoop for every 4oz. Then try crosscutting the nipple or getting a fast flow so the thicker formula will get through.
