Advice, PLEASE!!! I was at Wal-Mart shopping around and all of a sudden I look down and my LO is gasping for air and turning bright red. I hurry up and take her out of her carseat and by the time I get her out, she is spitting bubbles out her mouth & nose. Her color returned, but she never cried or anything. Real lethargic. I immediately took her to the ER and the doctor said she has normal `periodic breathing condition.` Where the infant will quit breathing for 10-20 seconds. He said its not of concern unless she turns blue or quits breathing for over 20 seconds. Then he took a chest x-ray and she also has mild bronchitis and he said it wasn`t of any real concern because she`s not that congested. Does any of that sound right??? Has anyone been through this? My daughter is only seven weeks old as of today.

angelajay - 135 days ago Well, that's another issue- the ER doctor said he consulting with my pediatrician with everything and that they were both in agreement. But I went ahead and scheduled an appointment to speak with my pedi. on Monday.

sexymummy - 135 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) get in contact with a doctor .. the best advice would be to take your baby to hospital and speak to a professional now

juels101 - 136 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I would see another doctor, find a doctor that will explain it more to you. THere is nothing more stupid and annoying than a doctor that gives short vague answers to a mother. That must have been terrifying and you deserve answers. I've heard of this happening and don't think it's a condition, but find a doctor that can put you at ease.

JuliMomOf4 - 136 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) My eldest son did this ALL the time when he was a baby. I swear I didn't sleep for 12 months, when he seemed to grow out of it. His wasn't caused by a virus, allergies or anything like that. He had sleep apnea which runs in hubby's side of the family. But he'd stop breathing whilst awake. I had an alarm to warn me if he'd stopped breathing, but I still could not sleep properly. I'd sleep with him in his bassinet right next to me. When he outgrew that, I slept on the nursery floor. The docs never really gave me any reason as to why he did it when he was awake, they couldn't explain it. But when he did it the first time and I called the Ambulance, they were excellent. They made sure I had everything I needed and that we had a follow up appt with a Paed. If you're still worried, take her to another doctor.

mariettap - 136 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I would call in the am and insist on a same-day appt with the pediatrician. We had an incident when our LO was 10 wks old (different cause but still no breathing for a spell--see myblog "close call"). I was *trying* to keep myself together but totally stressed out. I mean, I stayed awake the rest of the night b/c I was afraid to shut my eyes and let it happen again. She happened to have a well visit in the morning, and I explained to the doc and she said, "I *hope* you would have called us and come in anyway, even if you didn't have this well visit!" She explained at this young age, they can "de-sat" (get to too-low oxygen levels) very quickly. In the mean time, be sure to put her to sleep right beside you--Use a bassinet or pack N play and keep her *right* beside you at night so you can respond quickly if you need to. In my (thank goodness) limited experience with ER visits, I thought it was standard to recommend to the patient/parent to follow up with a visit with your family doc or pediatrician after all emergencies. Who sits around watching a newborn struggle to breath just to see if she happens to turn blue? ..sorry. That part's bugging me!

chrissy-511 - 136 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) That would scare me to death! I'm sorry you had to go through that! I'm due in 10 weeks & it scares me to think about stuff like that happening...

STCT - 136 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I'm not really sure. I think if that was my daughter I would still call her Dr tomorrow and see what they say.

megandgrace - 136 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) It does kinda sound normal, not the breathing thing but the bronchitis stuff sounds right. Bronchitis is caused by a virus and there is nothing they can do for it other then to make her comfortable if needed, like if she did have congestion or trouble breathing all the time, they would do breathing treatments to help open up her lungs. But if you do notice any new symptoms, like high fever, congestion, and more trouble breathing, call your doctor or take her back into the ER or an urgent care clinic. When my daughter was 6 weeks, i took her to an urgent care clinic because she was having labored breathings, where she was struggling to get a breathe. We were sent right over to the hospital because she had the RSV virus which caused bronchiolitis. She was put on oxygen and breathing treatments but only stayed over night in the hospital because she recovered very well. She was congested so the ball sucker thing was in great use. Just watch her very carefully and go on your instincts if you feel there is something wrong, even if it a false alarm, better safe then sorry!

5against1 - 136 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Im so sorry that happened to you. That would scare me to death. My nephew did this, but he would turn blue. The Dr. gave my sister one of those machines to keep on the baby 24/7, so if he stopped breathing, an alarm would go off. For your own piece of mind, maybe you should ask about getting one.
