RED VELVET CAKE!

My hubby likes red velvet cake, but rarely has any...maybe once every year or two, and usually it is one that he bought from the deli at the grocery. So, I decided to make one for him from scratch. He doesn`t like it. I do like it, but I don`t know what red velvet cake is supposed to taste like! He had asked for me not to put so much food coloring...I didn`t have any regular red coloring anyway so I used `no taste red` cake decorator coloring to give it just a pink tinge. And I used a recipe that called for butter instead of the 1 1/2 cups of oil that I was seeing in some of the red velvet recipes online. MY QUESTION IS THIS: Is the taste of a red velvet cake dependent upon the 1 to 2 ounces of liquid food coloring called for in most recipes? Or is it dependent on the use of 1 1/2 cups of oil? Or maybe hubby only likes cheap deli cakes? LOL Any ideas/suggestions/recipes are welcome!

nutnut - 938 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) you can just buy the cake mix in a box rather than do it from scratch. i cant explain what its supposed to taste like bc its a unique flavor. if he likes the premade in the grocery store he will probably prefer the mix you can get in the box too. betty crocker or pilsbury doesnt matter they both make it.

MelissaJoanne - 938 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I'm guessing that deli grocery cakes aren't made with great ingredients, but a *great* red velvet cake doesn't have any fake red food coloring, but instead uses beets to get the red color (it doesn't taste like beet, of course... it just colors beautifully). Red velvet cake should also have a lot of cocoa powder in it, which adds to the deep red color. It doesn't end up tasting like chocolate cake, exactly, but neither does it taste like a butter cake or vanilla cake. Along with vinegar and buttermilk it ends up tasting rich and unique. I would assume that your husband is partial to chemically tasting grocery store cakes (at least the grocery store cakes I've had always taste fake and chemically to me!).

bratgirl65 - 938 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Maybe the oil would have made it more moist. I dont know I'm not a baker. Just expierment until you make such a good one he devours it. See if you cant find a Julia Child recipe or something.
