When did you start your baby on rice cereal and was this under advice of a pediatrician or on your own initiative? Added: 934 days ago. Added by: bebe77 Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
Just curious. My baby is 6 weeks old Wednesday and I do not plan to start her on rice cereal until her age/weight meets the dr.`s approval - however, my mom had me on rice cereal at 10 days old and it was doctor approved.

by 6 weeks she had rice cereal made with formula. this was bc she was having a hard time with formula alone. she would eat and eat and cry and eat so much of the bottles she would throw everything back up. we tried different formulas, some with the added rice in it already and she would still do the same thing. so since her head was pretty stable, i fed her some rice cereal with her bottles off a spoon. it was just thick enough to stay on the spoon, but not too thick that it would pose a problem swallowing. she did fine. her pediatrican said it was ok, though not something she tells all her patients to do. this was just my situation with my daughter. you have to know if the baby is ready for it or can handle it. i would do a little bit at a time just to see. something rice cereal can constipate them too so that is something to watch out for. i didnt give her alot, just enough so she wasnt drinking so much formula. she did so much better and slept through the night by 8 weeks. good luck! my daughter had no weight issues. she was 75% for weight and 99% height. now she's 50 inches tall and 52lbs she's 7. =)

I started both my children on rice cereal at 1 month. I told the dr. at the check-ups, and he didn't approve or disapprove...My boys are now 6 and 3. Neither of them have weight issues or anything like that. My 3 yr old is actually small for his age. Was able to fit into size 18 month shorts until a couple of months ago.

I've always been told to start solids, inculding rice cereal at 6mo. This worked well for my first, but my second was super hungry and interested in food by 5mo so that is when I started. I would go by your baby and see when they seem interested and then give it a try.

My twins @ 8 weeks by docs orders for reflux.I strongly disagree with the obesity theory. One of my twins is 14 pounds while the other is a mere 9. Each child is different and will tolerate different foods differently.

People sight reasons such as obesity, constipation, future allergies...they've all basically been debunked. I mean you can tell just by reading the below replies...the majority of us did NOT wait until the recommended start age and none of us have bad experiences to report to you. Likewise, you are obviously fine, so your mother has no bad experiences to report either. Every baby is different, don't get me wrong, but the "solids myth"...and yes I consider it a freaking myth...is probably the quackiest thing that books and doctors have us worried about these days. I see the 'standards' changing again soon enough.

Go by your own instincts....Mother know's best! I have been giving my baby girl rice cereal since she was about 2 months and she's almost 4 months now. I did it more for her reflux problem though...she still eat's every 2 hours so it wasn't for that! Ha....do what you think is best! Good luck...

So...is obesity the only reason they say to hold off, or could they have serious problems with digestion? I plan to call the office this week.

i started my son on cereal when i could tell that a liquid diet was no longer satisfying him--- i dont need a doctor to tell me that my baby is hungry!!! lol i think ppl put their doctors advice over their own motherly instinct sometimes...who do you think knows the babys eating habits the best? the doc who sees them every few months, or the mom who is with them 24/7? i started my son at 2.5 months and got a lot of nasty comments about it from people that apparently thought they knew my son better than i did. all babies are different, but 10 days is reallllly early!!

My doctor told me not to give cereal until 4 months old, and never in a bottle always with a spoon. Also was only given once a day until 5 months when we went to twice a day then 6 months i started baby food once a day. I BF so i never felt the need to start any earlier then that.

I have four other children. The doctor never told me there isn't anything medically wrong with giving my children cereal early, her concern was the risk of obesity. All my children were given cereal in their bottle by the time they were 10 weeks old. They drank entirely too much milk and cried. Giving them a tablespoon of cereal in their bottle seemed to pacify them and they drank less, and fed less frequently.

I started my son on it when he was 21 weeks. They change their minds about things all the time, but at the moment they all say NO solids or anything other than milk until 17 weeks at least.

At 8 weeks old my twins were eating ceral and oatmeal by spoon (I have pics of it LOL). My doctor was aware of my decision and did not give approval nor disapproval. I was put on cereal at birth as were all of my siblings and 30+ cousins. No ill side effects, nadda one (obesity, allergies, etc). I do not agree with current standards for several reasons. I am a sociologist and have done extensive research on the 'studies' performed that lead to today's guidelines. My research, coupled with advice from women that have raised 35+ babies between them, is what lead to my decision. Well that and the fact that my babies were drinking 40+oz of formula a day and their tummies were still rumbling! My pediatrician is my resource for illnesses, vaccinations, develpoment, but nothing more. I am a Mom and he is a doctor :o)
