Induction with prostaglandins? Added: 908 days ago. Added by: angela-and-jay Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
I am going to be induced on Tuesday and the doctor said she is going to start by using prostaglandins... When I had my last child they induced me with Pitocin right away, so I got the epidural right away... How will being induced with prostaglandins be different? I`m already 2 cm dilated and 50% effaced, so should it go fast so I can get my epidural right away before the pain gets too bad (I`m a HUGE wimp)?? Do they switch to using pitocin after a certain time or do they usually only use one or the other?? Also, she said she was going to break my water... Does that hurt? Last time it broke on its own while I was contracting on the pitocin and with my epidural in so I barely even noticed anything because I was so numb! lol

its ust to soften up your cervix so the pressure of the babys head will kick in and cause contractions. i think they only would go to pitosin if you arent progressing enough. you could get the epidural after things get going in this case probably because getting it immediately would cause labor to slow way down. anyway good luck.

They usually insert gel pessaries up by your cervix and it stays in place for 6 hours.. they'll check progress and insert another gel pessary if little to no progress... However, once you are dilated to a 3-4 they break your waters and start you on pitocin.. Maybe the first time you were induced you were already making more progress than you are at the moment? either way, prostaglandin gel pessaries are MUCH less painful than going straight for the pitocin drip immediately... Go for an epidural when you feel you need one, but don't get it immediately if you aren't in any pain... Listen to your body and go with how you feel.. Good luck!
