Eating issues Added: 907 days ago. Added by: blondie9504 Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
My newborn (3 weeks old) only eats 2 oz at a time. How much should she be eating at this age? Sometimes she will eat 2 oz then and hour later eat 2 more oz but if I try to give her 3 oz at one feeding she wastes it. How should I deal with this? I need to try to get her in a routine, does anyone have any ideas? She was 6 lbs 11 oz and 20.5 inches long at birth and now she`s 6 lbs 13 oz and 21 inches long (Of course that was over a week ago so I`m sure it`s changed by now. I can`t wake her up to eat, when she sleeps, she sleeps like a rock and there is NO waking her. She sleeps during the day and is up ALL night. I`ve got her kinda spoiled and she gets to do what she wants when she wants. She wont go to sleep sometimes unless I`m holding her and god forbid I put her down! She loves her Daddy but it still has to be me to hold her to put her to sleep. She`s Mommy`s little princess.

if she isn't gaining an appropriate amount of weight every week, then you should try to feed her more during her feeds.

erin b has some great advice. You should wake her at night every 3 hours (minimum) to feed her until she hits 10lbs. If all she wants is 2 oz at a time, then that is plenty. Maybe she doesn't need more than that, especially if she is gaining an appropriate amount of weight- should be about 1 pound a week for the first 8 weeks or nearly a pound. After she hits 10 lbs, then it is safe to let her sleep. Do not take this the wrong way, but while it is wonderful that you like to spoil her, but you are her mother and need to do what is best for her. I'm not trying to critize you, but I just want to be sure you are in the right frame of mind to think critically- which is hard when you are full of hormones. She will continue to sleep all day and party at night unless you direct her into a better routine, using the techniques such as erin b or others suggest. (I've got a lot on my VIP site as well). Those techniques helped me to get my son sleeping through the night by 8 weeks old and gave mommy much needed time to sleep as well. I love my son, but I love my sleep and I know I'm a better parent to him when I get my sleep. Spoil her during the day, but do keep in mind that if she's got you under her control already, you might have an out of control toddler on your hands. Even now, she is being influenced by you= and the type of person she turns out to be later in life, will be shaped by everything you say and do now- the first 2 years are the most formative years of her life.

Babies tummys are so small still at this point. I think 2 ounces sounds about right for such a young baby. They can only fit so much into their tiny little bellies-and eat often at this stage. As far as having days and nights reversed-that can take a while to break. Just try and keep her awake longer in the day (I know that can be really hard!) and keep it bright in the day and dark at night. Eventually she will get adjusted to sleeping more at night. After she has napped for a while try and rouse her (during the day) even if she doesn't stay awake for long. And try to develop a routine at night to signal sleepy time. Even though she is still really young-it's never too soon to try and make things routine. Example : bath, jammies, read her a book, dim the lights and feed her, put her down and possibly put on a mobile or some soft music. Eventually she will get the hang of it! And for night time diaper changes and feeds-try and keep the lights as dim as possible. I got a little night light to use so I didn't have to turn on a bright light.
