Constipation Added: 889 days ago. Added by: lily3488 Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
My baby is 9 days old and i think he is constipated. He hasn`t poo for a day. Is there any home tricks that I may try before giving the doctor a call? The putting on vaseline w/ a cotton swab on his rectum looks like it can help and massaging his tummy as well. But is there others? Or does anyone has a suggestion? I am a first time mom and anything sounds promising.

I have heard massaging down wards from belly button to pubic line, or try a warm compress (make sure it's not too hot can burn baby badly)and put it where I said to massage. If your baby is only 9 days old keep a close eye you don't want the baby to become compacted...a sign of this is the tummy is hard. Also if you resort to calling the doctor ask if they might recommend changing the formula.

Your baby is not constipated until they have gone 5 days with a poo for a formula fed baby and 7 days for a breastfed baby. Also, when they DO poo - if it's constipation the stool will be hard and pebble like. If it's soft, moist and squishy - it's NOT constipation. Don't go poking your baby in the anus with a cotton bud UNTIL the recommended amount of days have passed.

Some babies don't poo everyday. Does he seem like he is having a tummy ache? When my babies were 3 weeks old the doc had us give them some watered down juice to get things moving but that was after no poo for 4-5 days.

My beautician told me that her nephew used to get constipated and it helped him if she would massage his tummy in a clockwise pattern (never anti-clockwise, as it can cause constipation supposedly!). Hope this helps. I've never heard of the cotton swab thing and I'd be extremely hesitant to do anything like that.
