My sister has a 2 year old and has lived with my mother until about 2 months ago. She was finally able to get into an apartment! Now everytime she turns her head he runs into the parking lot. Yesterday he was about hit by a car! She`s has tried explaining it to him, popping him, and taking toys away and no luck so far! How can we teach him not to run in the street. Up til now he`s has lived on 20 acres and been able to run wherever he wanted and now he can`t so I think he`s just confused. Any advice I can give her would be appreciated!

mother649808 - 885 days ago Thank you ladies. I've talked with her about the harness while she's "training" him to hold her hand!

Its-Chelle - 885 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my son is almost 3 and has now started to run out the door and down the street thinking he can go to the park alone!!! he doesnt understand he is not allowed to and i think its going to be tough for him to understand that at this age. were getting a lock put high on the door so he cant open it. i think youre right that he is so used to being able to have freedom and doesnt understand he has to be cautious now. i wish i had advice cause then i would know what to do. just keep reminding him of the dangers..

mariettap - 886 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Even a 2 year old who is raised in an urban area is too little to understand and remember to stay at mommy's side. He is unlikely to learn from smacking or yelling or even calm (re)telling. Time for mommy to adapt to their new environment (get lightening reflexes, for starters, and then tighten up the safety measures), b/c the child is too little to be responsible for his own safety. It only takes a second for the unthinkable to happen.

4BabyGirls - 886 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Hold his hand, put him in a stroller. At this age, they do not understand that something is dangerous. You can explain to him that it is dangerous and he must hold hands. He isn't going to think of that, though when he is running around.

*Jessica* - 886 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) My daughter is in her terriable two's and does the same thing! She wont listen to me, but she doesnt listen to anything I say, but I just have to think that, she is just 2, and I just have to watch her closely!

RobinG - 886 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) If he is running to the lot from a play area she needs to find an area further away or block him. Or even put a harness on him as she is teaching him. Some find it mean but not me. Could even get a 6 sided play gate area to play him in or play pen.

RobinG - 886 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) How about a stroller or holding him. 2 year olds do this and it is hard for them to understand dangers yet and arent not old enough to be allowed to walk on their own. She either needs to put him in a stroller, hold his hand, a shopping cart at store or carry him til he is older. I'd never let my 2 year old walk in a parking lot. He can learn but it takes time and teaching and it will not happen over night.
