Sleeping routine for a month old.. Added: 885 days ago. Added by: last.one.for.me Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
I`ve tried everything but I CAN NOT get my baby to settle for the night before 8:30-9pm.. He`s a good sleeper when he does go to sleep, he`ll easily sleep 10-12 hours through the night. The trouble is, my 6 year old, soon to be 7 year old and a big brother to TWO babies, goes to bed at 7:30pm - and I want to get into a routine that the babies go down for the night at 7-7:15pm so that my oldest son feels like the oldest soon and it`s reflected in bedtimes.. However, as I say, it just doesn`t work.. I`ve tried waking my 5 month old earlier, but he just naps longer during the day and god help you if you try to wake him before he`s ready.. We have a great bedtime routine by way of a bath, little massage and a bottle of milk and then into his crib and it used to work great, but now it`s not great. We keep everything quiet and dimply lit and try to talk to him as less as we can so he knows it`s bedtime, but it`s just working... Any ideas?

A 5 month old can most definitely have an early bedtime!!! I personally think it is ridiculous for a baby to go to bed so late. When my daughter was 4 weeks old I started putting her to bed for the night at 7:00pm and it worked out great! Then at 11 weeks she started sleeping from 7pm-8/9am. She is now 14 months and goes to bed at 6:30 and wakes up at 7am. Anyway- just try pushing the bedtime forward in 15 minute intervals. I would do it every 2-3 nights so it gradually gets to the time you want it to be. This is what they also suggest for daylight savings. Good luck, you should be able to do it!

Try gradually reducing the time. Put baby to bed at 8.30 tonight, 8.15 tomorrow night, 8pm the following night, and so on. It may work. By next week you could have him going down at 7. Let us know how you get on... my two school-going children are in bed by 7, but when they were babies, it was always around 7.30-8pm.

Sorry, didnt see that but I still feel 7:30 is to early for a 5 month old. And your other son should learn that babies are different so until the baby is older will often have a varied schedule. Hunter went down around 8:30-9ish at 6 months. He is 22 months and goes to bed at 8:00-8:15. None of my kids would sleep if I put them down at 7-7:15. Although some parents do accomplish it bu tnone I know in my family did. I still think it is expecting to much at 5 months, sorry ~ I think the time of 8:30-9 is perfect ~

The newborn physiology, from what I've read, just doesn't support organized sleep periods until about 3-4 months. What I told my 7 y.o. when we had the baby was Yes, the baby will be in her crib and her own room, yes, she'll go to sleep earlier than you do and we'll have quiet time for bedtime stories, etc, but it's going to take until she's about 4 mos old. That gave her something to hang onto until we got there. Things sort themselves out, but it does take a few mos. Those 1st few mos, though, oh, DD drew countless pictures of her family, featuring the 3 of us standing happy and holding hands and the baby in the crib! And when she would wake up and come see me in the morning and find the baby was already snuggled in bed with me and nursing, she looked so discouraged. By Thanksgiving you're going to have it all worked out.

I think one month is to early to go for a night time bed time and routine personally ~ Only suggestion I have is to not expect it this young ~ none of my babies would settle for the night til 3-4 months as far as before 8-9 pm. I think you're expecting to much, sorry ~
