Breast Pumps Added: 882 days ago. Added by: 2ndtimemommymel Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
My doctor has convinced me to try breastfeeding my son considering he will be born during the flu season. However, my husband is laid off and we are tight on funds... Can anyone give me any suggestions on some cheap breast pumps that work nicely?

I bought a Lansinoh manual pump for $35 at Walmart. It worked very well and would probably do well for you since you are not planning on using it all that long. I also bought the Lansinoh double electric pump.. it worked wonderful too.. it was $150

I really dont plan on pumping a whole heck of alot and I only plan on breastfeeding for 6 weeks or so... But I have to have surgery 3 weeks after my c-section and will need to pump for two days at least then when I go back to work in 6 weeks I will bump a little each day til I stop.

I have an Avent Manual pump, and it was 89$ at toysrus/babiesrus ... i havent tried it yet, but i assume if youre breastfeeding youre not going to be pumping all the time, so theres no need to get an electric one.

Have you ever checked out the prices for formula? I was shocked when I did. OK, money saving: If you primarily breast feed and don't expect to pump then bottle feed regularly, a $20 or $30 manual works well. I have been happy with mine (Medela Harmony) ever since my electric one burned out, but I do not pump daily. If you must pump daily, start asking around now for a hand-me-down. It is perfectly safe, b/c you buy your own set of tubes for a small price ($16? I forget now). The milk and your breast never come into contact with the motor, which is the expensive part. In fact, for the hospital rentals, they rent you a unit that gets used by many women, but they have you buy your own shields and tubing kit. You just need to check the manual to make sure you get the right kit. So think about the 2nd hand option and start asking friends, neighbors, even people on this site. Once a person has decided their done making milk for babies, it's really a big waste to throw away perfectly good equipment that still works well.

Call your insurance and ask if it is cover with a perscription from your doctor. most of them are. BTW... you will spend way more on formula than you will investing in a breast pump. I would also look into gov. resources and see if their is any way you can get one.

I bought a Medela Pump in Style on Amazon, used, then bought the parts (tubes & attachments) from Babies R Us. It works great and it saved me a ton of money, both on buying used and on not buying any formula. PS - Congrats on the new bundle of joy :)
