Son HATES Milk Added: 878 days ago. Added by: mamalu817 Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
I don`t know what to do...my son is a year old and has stopped drinking milk. We have tried everything from putting chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavors in it, ice cubes, etc. He refuses to drink it. He will get mad when you give it to him and throw it on the floor and starts going `juice, juice, juice`! Then I have my mother in law and her mother telling me he needs his milk, give him his milk, has he had his milk... What do they want me to do hold his nose and force it down? Anyone who has gone through this please help!

stop giving him juice . give him water instead. and he doesnt have to drink his daily quota of milk it can be disguised in his food. all dairy counts. i put milk in mash potatoes and his breakfast cereal counts too. yoghurts cheese all count too. but i would cut down on the juice habit. and dont ask him if he wants a drink, just put it in his cup with his dinner. if hes thirsty he will drink it.. if hes just being obtuse he wont. at a year old they are learning boundaries xx

will he drink soy milk? i dunno. you can get juice with calcium in it, you can give him yogurt, cheeses, etc. what about milk shakes with not alot of icecream in them?
i watered down my daughter's juice bc she was a juice monster. she didnt like milk either. even now, at 7yrs old, she wants nothing but orange juice, water, and the occasssional chocolate milk. she loves yogurts and cheese though. id rather she drink the juices and water honestly than her want sodas. im lucky she cant stand soda. and has only had a sip here and there on occassion when she was too thirsty to wait until we got home and took a swig of my pop.

They say they need milk because of the fat it has in it. It helps with brain development. You can get calcium elsewhere, cheese yogurt ect... My sister did not give her son milk (cows milk) she gave him Almond milk and put a drop of some sort of sunflower oil (the fat they need for the brain) in it. The oil had no taste. Maybe you should talk to your doctor or go to a natural health place and find an oil so he gets the much needed fat (you can put it in the juice).... me on the other hand would break the juice habit NOW. I have never given my kids juice. My three year old does not even really like it because she has never had it. It has no nutritional benifit. Actual fruit is much better for them and much better for thier teeth. Juice is filled with sugar (even 100% kind) I have found a decent juice if you wanted to ween off of it. It is called Honest Kids. Much better than most juices. My DD still prefers water or milk though.

I agree with the others, give him cheese and yoghurts to get the dairy into him. I would still offer him milk regularly though. My daughter would not drink cows milk unless I heated it, now she'll drink it warm or cold, so you could try warming it a bit. Other than that, keep persisting and one day he will probably just drink it.

What he needs is the benefits of milk which he can get in many other foods so he def doesnt need his milk. My first son hated it and this is what doc told me and after blood work it was confirmed that all the cheese and yogurt etc etc he was getting gave him what he needed. On the other hand to much juice is far worse then not enough milk IMO. Far to many kids live on juice all day and refuse to drink milk or dont drink enough milk and refuse plain water. My nephews drink alot of juice and have a mouth full of cavities from it. I'd offer water or milk and thats it. If you must give juice give a tablespoon/oz in the cup of water ~

He doesn't have to have milk. It's the calcium. You can give him cheese, yogurt, soy milk, calcium fortified orange juice, there are breads, cereals, & snacks like graham crackers with a good amount of calcium. There are some green veggies too if he likes those. Just look up foods with calcium & make sure he gets enough of those & he will be fine. Another thing milk is good for is vitamin D which you can get from some foods & the sun so make sure he plays outside a lot too :)

does he like cheese? or yogurt? they're both an acceptable form of dairy i think, plus the added protein. either of those are a way of him getting the same nutrients... i think.
