The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not to add anything until 6 months. This is because the baby's stomach cells have not fully developed an they are not ready to digest any solids yet. Baby's sleep patterns change, somedays they will sleep throughout the night and others they will wake up. I would wait at least until 4 months to add anything. Ans it is not recommended to thicken bottles, but instead give it to them by spoon. Most daycares wont even allow you to bring bottles that have cereal in them for the chocking reason.

No need until 6 months if you HAVE to add cereal to the bottle. I was told by all of my older relatives that it would help the baby sleep through the night, and the doctors all said wait until 6 months to give cereal or any solids, so I started cereal at 5 months, thinking it was the answer to all of my prayers and I couldnt wait to put him to bed with that cereal bottle and......... nothing... He woke up even MORE throughout the night, I think his stomach wasnt used to it or something, but it is not a catch all save all remedy as some may say... If you are set on trying it, I'd say wait until 6 months

After a hard time I quit breast feeding after a month and even though he was a good eater he would swallow/gulp and cry when taking his bottle the doctor recommended adding cereal to his formula and it solved the problem. He also started sleeping through the night. he is 9 months now and i still add cereal to his formula.

if you had a child that slept through the night before 3 months, then you are pretty lucky. She will more likely go back to that if that is her habit. Night waking occurs less frequently as your baby turns into a toddler, but waking up at night with your kids is part of being a parent. The idea of formula or feeding your baby breastmilk is to allow their digestive system to mature adequately. For the first few months, babies barely retain anything you give them... that's why it shoots right through the other end seemlessly as you feed them. Around 2-3 months, babies digestion increases and they might go 1-2 days without a movement. Rice is binding and therefore constipating. If your baby's digestive system is still in the maturing phase, then there is no reason to place more stress on their gut.
Babies grow up fast enough as it is. Enjoy your carefree days of bottle making. You'll have a messy toddler on your hands soon enough :)

when babies are younger than 4-6 months, most of them still have a 'tongue-thrust' reflex. This is a protective reflex to keep their digestive system from bacteria. If you are trying to feed your baby via spoon and they are not accepting the cereal, then they are NOT ready for solids yet. Babies will tell you when they are ready. The tongue thrust reflex is gone and they get super excited when they watch you eat. I agree with RobinG. If you look at websites about bottle feeding rice, it says no. Some sites also say that this teaches your child to have poor knowledge of being full and will grow up to over eat. Not something that a parent wants to have their child become. If your child is waking up at night (which is completely normal btw), they are more likely growing. Growth spurts (also known as cluster feeding) occurs at 7-10 days old and then once a month, usually right before their month birthday. Your child should not be given cereal until they are ready to take it by spoon. Until, formula or breast is best :)

I too agree with RobinG. Putting cerel in a bottle can be a choking hazard. And if baby still seems hungry after a bottle its probably time to increase oz, not add cereal. The nipples on a bottle aren't made for thick liquids, and if you poke holes in it that can cause baby to swallow to much at once and choke. Be careful.

I have given my daughter cereal in her night time bottle for the last 2 weeks because she was eating so often and not sleeping through the night anymore either. Her Dr didn't "recommend" me giving it to her but I opted to do it anyways. I only put like 1/2 teaspoon in 3 oz. It helps and she loves it. I did try to spoon feed it to her but I didn't get her to swallow too much and we both ended up covered in it, we'll try the spoon next week again to see if she likes it then. My DD turned 8 weeks old yesterday. Everyone is going to tell you differnt things, I just went with my gut and went ahead and gave it to her. Good luck!

She is going through a growth spurt so time to increase her milk, not add cereal :) Cereal works for some but not all ~ and isnt recommended til 4-6 plus months And def not via bottle, spoon fed is best :)
