Baby Poo Question

So I am breastfeeding my 7 week old little girl. Normally, she has a little bit of poo every time we change her diaper, and once, or twice, or a few times a day, her diaper will be really poopy. I began to think of that as normal. However, the other night, I was really tired and she woke up, so we decided to feed her 4oz of formula. Her stools continued to be the same the next day. But starting yesterday, she has hardly poo`d at ALL. I mean, I`ve even changed her diaper a few times and NOTHING in there at all. She has had a few SLIGHTLY poopy diapers - but even those have been less than the amount of poo that was in there before every time we changed her. And she has had ZERO really poopy diapers. Also, last night, she was REALLY upset. I mean, crying, and you could tell she was REALLY mad, which rarely ever happens. But she doesn`t act like this all the time. I`m wondering if we screwed her regularity up by feeding her formula one time? Could she be constipated? WHEN should I start to get [incredibly] worried? Will the issue resolve on it`s own in time, or do I need to call the doctor soon? As of now, I`m planning on waiting it out for the rest of the day, but if she gets mad again like that, I`ll call.

LilyPants - 848 days ago The issue seems to have righted itself this afternoon. HOLY COW that was a lotta poo! Smelly, too! But she gave me two huge smiles afterward, and seems in a MUCH better mood now! Thanks! =)

MsModernBeauty - 848 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I think it sounds like she is going through the 6 week growth spurt. That could be why she is upset (more hungry than usual) and not pooping (using absolutely all of the nutrients). Thats what my bf'ed dd did at 6 weeks...Also , bf'ed babys CAN go up to 10 days without pooping because the milk is so good for them, almost every part of it can be used by there bodies, so there's less to poop out. :) hope she feels batter soon!

jastinel - 849 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) hi,i dont think its a problem but when you breastfeed the poo every feeding or if not that every other feeding, when formula fed they poo less often, you did not do anything wrong just start to breastfeed and in no time your baby will be back to normal, when she was mad and crying she is prob constipated coz formula it takes longer to break done, when you breastfeed you feed more often so they go more hope this helps you i bresastfed my son for 18 months and enjoyed ever bit of it he is 2 and 1/2 now and at times i miss it becuase its a special bond between the two of you

lb71 - 849 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I have twin nephews that I lived with for their first 8 mos. We kept track of every poo and pee for each boy. Somewhere between about 4 and 10 weeks (sorry, it's all a blur, can't be more specific!), one of them quit pooping -- for eight days!! We (my bro, SIL, & I) were all freaked about it, esp as the other boy was still pooping a lot every day. But when we told the pediatrician, she just laughed and said his digestive system was maturing; when he had to go, he'd go; and wasn't it a gift to us that he wasn't going every day? When we got home from the dr.... that baby let go.... OMG, eight days' of poo, it was colossal!! Formula takes longer to digest, so that could be part of the delay with your DD's digestion, but it doesn't totally clog the works - it's just maybe like if you ate a steak when you typically have salad, so you'd feel heavier and it would take you longer to process what you ate. But the time lapse between the formula and when the issue began makes me think they are unrelated. Your DD might be crying from gas, or she might be picking up on your stress, or she might just be tired & cranky! I'd suggest that you call your dr, to get some peace of mind, but my guess is she'll tell you it's just a normal thing that happens as a digestive system matures, and to "watch out!" for when her poo does come... cuz it's gonna be a landslide, lol!
