At what age is it OK to let a baby `cry it out` when going to sleep?

MummyRee - 710 days ago Just to be clear, I haven't actually done this as I don't agree with it either, I probably worded my question wrong, but I was just interested as to when people start using this method as I have read many different opinions. I didn't want any judgement, different methods suit different people. I myself prefer to comfort my baby whenever she is crying and don NOT let her CIO. Thanks for the constructive answers that I received, the judgemental ones were unnecessary!

jaychay - 710 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i am confused with the term cry it out. i mean my son pretty much slept all night from 6+ weeks. he was in his own room by 6 months and sleeping well with the bath, bottle, bed routine. ocasionally he would wake a few hours into his sleep so id check his nappy pat his back then come back out. he would then whimper maybe 5min or so and go back to sleep. does this mean i use cri it out? or is this when your baby crys and you dont go through at all and they cry themselves back to sleep?

lgk616 - 710 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) It's also not my preferred method - I also believe in attachment parenting. Six months is the minimum age - this is when they also start solids - and NOT before 6 months! I would also suggest reading "The No Cry Sleep Solution".

MelissaJoanne - 710 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) She actually DID ask if it was okay to let your child cry it out, specifically at what age. As mentioned by a few others, the answer is 'never'. Calling something a 'method' doesn't make it okay, and Ferber doesn't even agree with alot of what people call the Ferber method, and CIO. Here's a quote from him: "Simply leaving a child in a crib to cry for long periods alone until he falls sleep, no matter how long it takes, is not an approach I approve of. On the contrary, many of the approaches I recommend are designed specifically to avoid unnecessary crying."

T3POandR2D2 - 710 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Ferber actually came out with a statement that he was wrong, BTW...

canadababy - 710 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) She didn't ask if it was okay to let your baby CIO!! I let me DD CIO starting at 7months because she started waking up every 2 hours at night, it it worked very well. Ferber recommends 6months.. http://www.babyminestore.com/newsFerberMethod.html

rice-and-squeaks-mama - 711 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I personally do not beleive in CIO at all. It can actually cause attachment issues between parent and baby and just seems so unfair to me. A lot of my friends have used it and I try not to judge as different things are right for different families. But I will never do it. To me a mother is there to nurture her child n meet its needs - we knew before having babies that it meant sleepless nights! In saying that I started a set bedtime routine at around 8 weeks and my little man was sleeping 12 hours straight from 12 weeks!!!!!! (Story, bath, massage, bottle, grobag, settle to sleep).

smiling politely - 711 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) its never ok to ignore your child when they cry.

ashysmm1 - 711 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) 6 mths is what my doctor told me to start trying it out and i am glad i did it at 6mths cause i got a full night sleep ever since

lilyb - 711 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) 6 months is the youngest age recommended

lilith - 711 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) To be honest I don't practice that at all, so I couldn't give you any sound advice. The only time when I let a baby cry is when I was sick and on the toilet, or I needed a few to calm down before I attempted to deal with said screaming child. I prefer attachment parenting, I want my kids to know that I will always be there. Maybe ask your Pediatrician?

RobinG - 711 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Thats horrible and child abuse to CIO with a newborn baby 4 plsu weeks :( the ferber method recommends 4+ months or older but since my son became distressed and choked and it could have been a tragedy I say never. I didnt do it after that with my next two children. It instills fear and when I cry myself to sleep I wake with a headache, I'd never do that to my child. JMHO so my answer is it should never be done to a child under 3 yrs old ~

*happiestmommy* - 711 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Omg. Do not let ur baby cry it out at 4 weeks. That is just ridiculous. Most books say babies can start crying it out at age 4-6 months. If u are going to use this method I suggest using the Ferber method. I read his book and it worked wonders for us.

rach84 - 711 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) My gf does the cry it out n her bub is now 9wks and she started bout 4 weeks.
