describe your first labor? Added: 700 days ago. Added by: angelinarichter Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
for those of you who aren`t first time moms, please describe your first labor. duration, if you gave birth early or late, etc. I have heard many wives tales of first time births such as first timers are always in labor for along time and that they always go past their due date

scary to read lgk616! you were given cytotec! Did you know it is not approved to induce labour by the FDA and is a catagory x drug. It causes some women to have insanely strong contractions. Some women who have been given this have had ruptured their uterus or had contractions so strong that it forced amniotic fluid emboli into their bloodstream through their placenta- lodging in their hearts, brains or babies cords. This drug is incredibly dangerous. Doctors in the US have been warned for years not to use it and to use safer induction methods such as pitocin and cervidil but they don't because the medication is cheap and costs only pennies. It is a horrifying drug and I want all women to be aware that this medication is not only used for induction in the US (not canada thank heavens) but can actually kill them and their child. NO mother should ever have this given to them.
I hate to scare you, but it's true and you NEED TO BE AWARE!!! please please tell others about this too!

I was overdue with my first and resorted to having labour induction massage at my chiropractors office (I believe this turned my son breech but I didn't know). 40 weeks 3 days I had contractions every 20 minutes. But it didn't amount to labour. My husband and I got busy that night and I started having some bloody show during the next day. 40 weeks, 5 days I felt contractions at 8am. They woke me up and were regular through the day. By 4pm they were getting more uncomfortable and I couldn't relax. By 9pm I was in the shower and getting uncomfortable. At 1am I got my husband to ask the midwife to come to the house. They weren't every 3 minutes but every 4-5 minutes and lasting 60-90 sec. She came over and checked me and I was 4 cm and going up to 7cm during a contraction. She drove us to the hosptial and I climbed into the tub there. Stayed in the tub from 2am-6am with the nitrous oxide gas (wonderful stuff if used correctly). Got out at 6am, peed and was checked again-9cm. By 730am She broke my water and meconium came out- really thickly. I was at 10 cm and then started to feel a really strong urge to push. She checked me again and this time could feel the baby- it was his bum. He was breech. I was wheeled to the OR and given a spinal shot of morphine in between some pretty severe contractions. He was born by c/s at 8:57am- about 25 hours after going into labour- 4 or so of those spent being uncomfortable.
This one- I have a midwife again, I'm going for a VBAC. NO surgery if I can help it. I still have numbness across the incision line and it took me about 6 months to recover. I'd rather heal from tearing. I would not get an episiotomy either as ripping heals better than cutting (cutting can lead to worse ripping- try ripping a piece of paper straight compared to cutting first and then ripping and see how the rip goes).
If you are a first timer, I would highly recommend reading this book by Ina May Gaskin. SHe is THE leading midwife expert in the States and has delivered thousands of babies. I dilated fast, I used her breathing techniques and during my labour I felt powerful and wild. It was amazing and I felt so strong. We are women and we are built to do this!!! The first half of her book is filled with stories of first time births and it was so encouraging to read those. She also goes through the pros and cons of every procedure you can face in the hospital and explains everything very well. SHe is an advocate for A SAFE BIRTH and wants to bring down the maternal death rate in the US (which is climbing over the last 10 years).

My water broke around midnight. I left for the hospital an hour later. They kept me all night didn't start anything until 8am. They gave me an epi and induced my labor. The epi didn't take to me at all!! It hurt. From Noon that day up until the moment he was born (3:47pm) I felt everything, but I will tell you now, I will never ever take that pain back. It was the best pain in the world! I'm doing my next child all natural. No drugs at all! It was awesome!

My first was two weeks late, and I was induced. There I was, set on being "earth mam" no drugs, but no one told me about double peaked contractions. Finally I let them give me Nubain. IT messed me up, better than alcohol. Then they gave me an epidural, and had trouble getting it between my vertebrae. I don't remember too much, the Nubain messed me up. Went in at 7am, had my girl at 7:19 pm. I couldn't feel to push, and I guess I wasn't screaming but growling like a dog. The OB cut me and used the vac to get her out. My LO screamed until they put her in my arms, she went quiet instantly. I sang Janis Joplins Bobby Mcgee o her, which I did often throughout my pregnancy. The next day they had me on some drip for my preeclampsia, and didn't realize I was having a reaction to it until I said "N-Nurse?? I uh, I can't seem to keep my eyes looking straight, and the room is spinning. I think it's time to get me off this shit," lol She looked at me closely, and ran out of the room. Apparently my eyes were shifting back and forth so rapidly that it scared them.

I had to be induced a week early due to high blood pressure. I was admitted at noon, they checked me at 3pm I was 3cm and they started the pitocin..they broke my water around 5 pm..I was around 5cm...and just kept cranking up the pitocin..at 10:30 I was checked again and fully dialated and ready to push. I started pushing at 10:30pm and pushed till 12:10 am when she was born. I had to push for 1hr and 40 mins..apparently the right side of my cervix wasn't completely thinned out...that's what made it take so long. So in total my labor was 9 1/2-10 hrs..Which isn't bad for a first time mom...considering the fact that I was induced..I kinda dialated 1cm an hour. Hope this time is just as smooth or easier..Of course without the induction..I'd like to go on my own :)

I was induced 1 week early as I had gestation diabetes. They started inducing at 9:30am by placing a pill in to soften the cervix. Contractions were easy until about 12:30pm when my water broke and they became intense. One on top of the other at times. At 3:30pm, my dr made me take the epidural as my daughter was in distress with contractions and the epidural helped. Although I was willing to go without it. By 4:30pm I was fully dialted and at 5:05pm my daughter was born. Was a good first labour - nothing to it really! xox

My waters broke 4 days after baby was due, on a wednesday at 11pm, but no contractions that I could feel (they put me on the monitor and I was having contractions every 5 mins but I couldn't feel them) I went home. Thursday afternoon at 4.30 whilst at the shops (was walking trying to get things going so I didn't have to be induced) I had my first mild contraction. These continued til about 11pm when they intensified. I stayed at home til 2.30am and at 5am I was fully dilated. I was then pushing for 3hrs as the baby was stuck on my pelvis, she was delivered healthy 1 minute before my booked induction. I had only gas and air, which they took off me for the last 1-2 hrs as I was really quite spaced out and so wouldn't be able to push properly. All in all a good first labour :-)

I had my first 2 years ago and was in active labour for just 8 hours. He was 2 weeks late but then only 5% of babies are born on thier due date! I personally found that labour was exciting and the worst part for me was the contractions! :)

I had my first baby in September and was only in active labour for just under 12 hours, and she was a month early. I had a back labour, so was pretty sore - but the whole experience was way better than what I had been anticipating.

I went into labor (by myself) two days before my due date and had my LO the day before his due date. My labor went pretty well until my son got stuck under my pubic bone and they had to vacuum his huge head out. lol. If my LO hadn't been 9 lb 2 oz I wouldn't have had any problems. I went in, got an epidural after three hours, and all in all it was a great experience.

I was due june 17th, by june 28th i still hadn't delivered so I was scheduled for induction the next morning at 6a.m. Unfortunately I never made it to 6a.m. as my water broke at 1a.m. We rushed to the hospitel where I ended up in dry labor for 44 hours and 45 minutes. Ofcourse epidural had already worn off. I was very skinny so imagine my surprise at a 9.5 lb baby! That was my first, hope my second is nothing like that.

Due on a Tues, went into labour that Fri morning but I wasn't dialating. I had my OB appt that morning and he did a sweep. I continued to labour without dialating, went to the hospital that evening. They broke my water the next morning, epidural mid-afternoon and baby by 9pm. I laboured for 42hours (it was hell) and pushed for just over an hour. My mom had a similar experience with me, I was hoping for an easier labour but I was pretty sure it would be like hers. And now I'm really hoping the 2nd delivery will be MUCH easier, lol!

I had a doctors appointment four days before my duedate, and my blood pressure was a lil high so he sent me into get a stress test & to get my BP monitored for a while.. told me to pack a bag cause he might have to come induce me if it comes back bad.. got to the hospital sat there for about 2 hours and they said they wanted to check me and i was 4cm dialated (2cm at my appointtment) the BP came back fine but i was in labor so they set me up a room. i seriously could barely feel my contractions.. just light cramps and tightening of the uterus.. the nurse came in they checked me again and i was like 6cm dialated she asked if i wanted an epidural i said yes.. i didnt want to wait and get stuck with not getting one lol the guy came in and gave it to me wasnt bad at all and started to numb about 4-5 minutes later. waited for things to progresss.. finally time to push i think it took about 45min of pushing i couldnt feel though so i wasnt sure if i was pushing hard enough lol. 12 from my appointment to having my baby didnt need an episiotomy. everything was great!!

My first labor was 7.5 hours to be exact, I was 43 wks PG though before I delivered her. My next two Deliverys were at 15.5 and 9.5 hours of labor, so they increased, but they were both born at 38wks instead of 43 (both boys)

if you want to read my birth story it's on my page, but it's long.. short version is, i had my first baby in jan and my labor was induced and it was a HORRIBLE experience. i was in labor for 24 hours.. pushed for 3.. the dr refused to give me an episiotomy.. they had a mirror infront of me so i could see my babys head.. it was stuck in the same position for the entire 3 hours and they just kept saying "push!!" finally he came out of course.. thank goodness for epidurals (even though it wore off on one side) .. i just wished i was never induced.. i think if i wasnt induced i might of had a better experience..
