I love baking cakes, heres a basic recipie i use and some tips... you have your marge, caster sugar, eggs and SR flour. use the same amount of marge, sugar and flour, for example 8oz of each and then half that for the amount of eggs, so 4 eggs. or 10oz will be five eggs ect... blend the marge and sugar for as long as possible untill it goes a much lighter colour and fluffy-ish. then add the eggs and blend for a while to get maximum air in to the mixture. when it comes to the self raising flour gradualy sieve it in and fold, dont beat. if you add cocoa then add it with the flour. maybe two heaped spoons? (i usually geuss that bit) once the flour goes in you need to get in in the oven quick before it loses the air you've put into it. make sure your tin is greased and floured before you begin and when its in the oven try not to keep opening the door to check it, the heat escapes and the cake will plop! for butter icing I use half a block of butter and half a pack of icing sugar and some cocoa if you like. blend the two together untill it goes nice and light in colour and texture :) sorry if this sounds patronising. I really hope it doesnt! good luck and happy baking! :D x

My advice? When it comes to cakes, just use the box lol!! I like to bake too, and I am actually decent at it. But scratch cakes are one thing that I just don't bother with. I've never found a recipe as good as the box ones :-)

Oh my gosh that recipe has equal flour and sugar!! ha ha. No wonder it was so sweet! Baking just takes some practice, you'll get the hang of it with time. I found that always mixing the dry ingredients even if the recipe doesn't say that, help with the texture of most baked goods.

taste.com.au has some great recipes - I'm not a great cook but have made some yummy chocolate cakes and banana breads from this site. Good luck!

The link below is to a cupcake site. I've baked their basic recipe and made some of their frostings with rave reviews. I made their applesauce cupcakes for my daughter's first birthday.

Start out with baking something simple like cookies. If you follow the recipe exact, and i dont see why it would come out any different. Just try to get a hang of baking simple things from scratch. If they still turn out horrible than maybe baking just isnt your thing.
