Placenta Retention Added: 349 days ago. Added by: Nkem78 Section: General. Status: This question is Closed. (Questions will be closed after 10 days.)
I recently lost a friend who went into labour and died of placenta retention leaving behind her a year old son and her hubby! I just don`t understand what causes this problem, can anyone advice us the dos and donts that can prevent this to happen to anyone, or is it just nature or was my friend so unfortunate! May the Lord see us through!

I think had something different then. Placenta retention would be that the placenta does not come out on its own after the baby is already born. It kills people in third world countries due to infection and sometimes bleeding because of the particles left in the uterus. It wouldn't kill the baby as it is just defined by not being expelled after baby is born. Did she have severe placenta previa do you think? Some situation where the placenta was blocking thr canal and the didn't do a c- section or something?

I heard the hubby is suing the hospital, it was as a result of carelessness, both her life and that of the new born were lost, she lost a lot of blood, its just a. Shame, she has been put to rest today! Thanks ladies, may we never encounter such problems in our lives! God be with u all!

So sorry for your friend. I agree with the other ladies, it should not have happened and it is rare.

Yes, that was something that is routinely taken care of in hospitals. Even homebirth midwives know to call an ambulance and it doesn't end up so tragically. Mine was able to be dislodged and pulled out and it was such a non big deal that I forget it even happened! I don't think you can prevent it but it is very routine and easily taken care of.

In this day and age, she should not have died from a retained placenta, unless she was under no medical care, and did not seek any medical care after the placenta wasn't expelled. The family either has a malpractice lawsuit on their hands, or this was an unfortunate case of a homebirth gone wrong. Sorry to hear about your friend, but as long as you have a midwife/doctor present at your birth, you wont die from this, in the very rare chance it happens.
