My little guy is 2 weekis old I breastfeed but I supplement 20% of the time. He has not had a bowel movement in 23 hours and was having them like 4 times a day. Is there anything you can give them like karo syrup or something all natural to help them go?

bcalove82 - 330 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) It is totally normal! I thinj babies poop a lot at first and then after a couple of weeks they slow down. I don't know if it is build of from life in the womb or just all their little parts revving up for a new lifetime of work, but they don't poop all the time anymore after a while.

Breastmilk itself is a natural laxitive. It is normal for a breastfed baby to go a period of time without a bowel movement as breastmilk is so easy for them to digest.

He was so backed up and a MESS! Hysterical....if your child is constipated...you will know it...just because there is no poop, doesn't mean there is some in there ya know? Is he showing signs of constipation?

marie01234 - 331 days ago cbv25 that does make sense I know he was going like 4 times a day but that was while strictly breastfeeding. Maybe that was wase built up while in the womb. When I started giving him some formula they seemed to stop but prune juice does sound likie a much better idea if I absolutely have to give him something.

frenchie23 - 331 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I agree with Cbv25, my DD was going every 4ish day and when I saw my pediatrician, she said bfeed babies don't necessarily go everyday since breast milk produces a lot less waiste... Unless you baby is in discomfort, bloating (hard tummy) and gassy I wouldn't worry too much ;)

mummy2lucas - 331 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Brown sugar in warm water-always worked for my LO,also dont know if you can get it where you are but gripe water seemed to help a lot too!:)

goingfornumber3 - 331 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I tried karo syrup with my son at the suggestion of his former pediatrician when he was around that age because he pooped once a week. It didn't work. I wish I could give you more advice but in truth neither of my kids were heavy poopers in the first few months but in truth I'm not either now so I think it's just genetic in our case. But when my son was maybe 2 months old and started straining when he went I started making prune juice using gerber baby food stage 1 prunes mixed with water to help him regulate some. And by the time he was really being introduced to solids he was much more regular. My daughter started going 2 times a day immediately after birth and then that slowed but she never strained, never seemed in pain, and her pediatrician wasn't worried about it. So I let hers even out on its own. Oh and DS was formula fed while DD was breastfed.

cbv25 - 331 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) NO need to use any intervention at this point (23 hours). It is perfectly normal for breastfed (or primarily breastfed) babies to go several days without a bowel movement. Breast milk contains very little waste in it, so baby's body and bowels are not forced to process such waste and produce a bowel movement to rid it. It is perfectly acceptable for formula fed babies to go 3-4 days without a bowel movement and breastfed babies up to a week. Karo syrup is not the preferred method for producing stool either. It does nothing but get baby to inject mass amounts of sugar which stimulate the intestines to secrete enzymes that "lube" up the tract to make passing the stool easier. Problem is, this mass production of said secretions can make baby dependent on outside interventions in order to have a bowel movement (lazy bowel). Giving an ounce of water or pure prune juice is a much gentler and natural method.
