By: GrahmCrackerJennacide
Added: Tuesday 29 July 2008
First noticed:before pregnancy
Seriousness:Unbearable
Discomfort:It feels like a cramp or a pulling feeling.
Treatment or advice:I just lay down to alleviate the discomfort. I don't want to take anything for it. Took a warm shower and helped.

First noticed:week 22
Seriousness:Quite bad
Discomfort:I felt like I had a heaviness in the pelvic area. It seemed to worsen when I would walk.
Treatment or advice:The doctor said the baby is sitting lower than it should be at this point and is causing alot of pressure. He said just to take it easy and avoid lifting heavy weight.

I have just been diagnosed with SPD too. It is really painful and I'm really struggling to cope with the pain I have been perscribed pain killers which don't help and given crutches. I'm only 27 weeks and I advised that it will get better after the baby is born. I'm off work too at the moment so am feeling pretty useless.

Bencharlie11 - Monday 28 April 2008
Hi I am 26 weeks and have this terrible pain when I walk in my pelvis. Sometimes it is so bad that I cannot even take a step or stand on my feet. I have been to my doctor and he has said that it is a condition common in pregnancy called symphysis pubis dysfunction. If you think you have this you should tell you doctor straight away. Here is some info on the topic and I hope this helps any woman who is suffering with the same thing. What is symphysis pubis dysfunction? Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) is a mild to severe pelvic joint pain. As the name suggests, it affects the symphysis pubis joint, which is the joint between the 2 bones at the front of the pelvis. SPD can present during pregnancy (sometimes as early as the 12th week), during labour and childbirth or in the postnatal period. Although most pubic pain goes away in the postnatal period, it may persist and become long-term if not treated properly. What are the symptoms? Symptoms vary from woman to woman but almost always involve quite severe pubic pain. Tenderness and pain low down and in the front is common but often the pain feels as if it is inside. Some women report that they feel a ‘clicking’ in their pelvis when they walk and a lot of pressure in the pubic area. Any activity that involves lifting one leg at a time or parting the legs tends to be extremely painful. Everyday activities like putting on clothes, climbing stairs, sitting down, getting up or even just walking become difficult due to the pain. Many women complain that even turning over in the bed is especially painful. The pain of SPD may be compounded by a sciatica pain (a pain that shoots down the buttock and leg). SPD may also be associated with bladder dysfunction. What causes it? The exact cause of SPD is unknown but it is thought to be a result of the pregnancy hormones, which loosen the ligaments of the body in preparation for birth. Certain ethnic groups are more prone to the condition and risk factors include: Having large babies Pre-existing problems with the symphysis pubic joint Previous pelvic or back pain Trauma to the pelvic region Another theory is that SPD is caused by misalignment of the pelvic bones and that this puts a lot of pressure on the symphysis pubis cartilage. How is it treated? Treatment of SPD usually involves bed rest, painkillers and anti-inflammatories. Your doctor will probably refer you to a physiotherapist who may provide therapeutic ultrasound, TENS or ice to relieve local pain. If the pain is very severe and you have difficulty walking you may be given crutches. SPD may be slow to resolve. In the meantime, there are a number of ways of coping with the pubic pain: Put a pillow between your legs when sleeping Keep your knees together when turning in bed When standing, stand symmetrically, with your weight evenly balanced on both legs Sit down when getting dressed, especially when putting on underwear, tights or trousers An ice pack may ease inflammation in the pelvic area Swimming may help relieve pressure on the joint A lumbar pillow may be helpful when sitting A pelvic support belt can help relieve pain.

Related: pubic symphisis

By: Eleanor V.M.
Added: Jun 23rd 2006
First noticed:week 25
Seriousness:Annoying
Discomfort:I felt like the area has been bruised. The muscles that attach to the pubic symphisis are a bit sore when I move. After getting up from a nap without changing position, I heard my pelvis click and felt a very minimal pain. I think it's because my pelvic bones are loosening up a bit, for the baby's continuous growth and future delivery.

I had this with my second pregnancy, and now again with my third. I have been seeing my chiropractor on a regular basis , and it has helped alot. I still have bad days, but overall is way better. Hey it's worth a try. (The first couple of times made it feel worse, but it does get better)

MsMistiM - Monday 19 May 2008
I have the same thing, and my mom told me it was normal, that it was pelvic bones streching. But I think they've streched too much!!! It is painfull to roll over, I have to have my honey help me up out of chairs. I can't get on the floor. I was putting baby gifts away from the baby shower Friday. And I was on all fours, taking my time trying to get up. I am going to ask my dr about it next Tuesday. It is so horrible, I HATE it!!! I feel like i weigh 5oo pounds and can't walk right. It's terrible.

paul02keisha05 - Tuesday 6 May 2008
yea i am having this for the first time out of three pregnancies and it is unbelieveable my doctor said that if i must sleep on my back to sleep with a pillow under my legs to ease the pain

chelz19x - Wednesday 30 April 2008
i had this with my last pregnancy and am already starting to feel it with this one.. this is the most painful thing i have ever felt.. almost as bad as labor. it is the worst at night when you roll over in bed, but if you dont roll over it will hurt after a while too. and getting up in the morning, forget about it! my doctor said the only thing i can do is take tylenol before bed.. URG!

babybluesc - Saturday 12 April 2008
I had this with my last pg, and have it again this time. Symphysis pubis dysfunction. There IS more you can do: go to the chiropractor! There is also a great book with exercises you can do--and your doc/midwife can write an order for physical therapy (described in the book, too). The book is called 'Relieving Pelvic pain during and after pregnancy' by Cecile Rost. You can get it on Amazon--definitely worth it! Good luck ladies--I totally feel your pain!

Staci - Tuesday 8 April 2008
I asked my doctor about it and he said that there are two bones there with cartilage holding them together. The two bones are being pulled apart and the cartilage is what hurts in that area. There is really nothing to help with the pain except for heat and Tylenol. If the two bones separate he said that you could be put on bed rest.

Na Na - Tuesday 8 April 2008
i get the same feeling except the clicking / popping noise.. anyway when i'm laying down at night what i usually do is lay in a position as if i am running .. [one leg bent in front of the other] this helps out a lot.. and when i take shower's i take warm ones for at least 20 mins.

cyb3r0ptik - Thursday, Nov 8th
SPD: I'm week 35, and this first started at about 24-25 weeks. Sometimes I need help standing up and even going to the bathroom. Constant hip popping when I move in bed. Since week 27 I've had to step out of the car with both legs rather than one leg first. My pubis area is swollen and very tender. Sometimes pulses with pain for no reason.

ihopeudance - Sunday, Dec 10th
This is my fourth pregnancy, I am 27 weeks pregnant and suffering from pubis symphisis. OUCH!! Rolling over in bed is a killer...let alone getting out of bed and your whole pelvis feeling like it has to realign itself before you take a step, if you can take a step without help. Midwives were great...try sitting on the edge of your bed with your knees lower than your pelvis. Sitting on an exercise ball makes a big difference! And swimming, i cannot recommend swimming enough, just being in the pool taking the weight off the baby! Dr gave me Panadeine Forte, but I am reluctant to take it(causes constipation, among other things)..I took Panadol just to give me relief so I could clean my house. Midwife said to try Glucosamine Tablets, a natural remedy for joints and muscles that atheletes use.

Shahida - Sunday, Jun 25th
My pubic symphisis makes the worse clicking and popping sounds mostly when I try to turn over in bed or pulling up out of bed. It is the worse soreness I have ever felt during pregnancy. I am currently 38 weeks pregnant with twins and I have found that when trying to roll over on to my side that if I put the pillow in between my legs before I turn it seems to keep my legs from shifting too much and pinpointing the pain in the center. I also find that getting someone in the house to help roll me over helps me use less effort into your muscles to pull yourself over. The less attention you call to your pubic bone, the less pain you feel. After you get rolled over...have them wedge a pillow under your lower back to keep you steady and in position for a while. It really works for me. I hope it will work for you.

I'm having the same problem. It does get very annoying at times.I notice that it's when i'm flat on my back though so i try to lay on my side anymore or when that pain happens i lift my legs up and it tends to releive the pressure.I had two kids already and i dont remember that pressure only when the baby was in the head down position getting ready to be born. Some say it's just where the baby likes to hang out but i think i'll just ask at my next appointment.I am also 19 weeks and im hoping that the pressure will go away as the baby moves up.Well good luck

hi it sounds a bit like a problem i have called symphosis pubis disfunction basically your pelvis has a small split, thats natural for everyone. However in some cases of women who have your symptoms they have 'spd' it is when the split starts to seperate causeing your symptoms. It can start in any pregnancy but once you get it you get it in every pregnancy and it starts earlier in each one. The pressure of the baby causes the pain ( i am finding getting in my car and up the stairs hard now I am 20 weeks into my fourth preganacy and have had it in each of them). This must been seen by your midwife, as you need to see a physio therapist who will show you som excercises and give you a support to wear under your clothes to relieve the pressure.Your midwife will refer you. However this will go away the minute your baby is born.It sounds all bad but its ok really and the advise off the physio really helps so does sitting on a bid birthing ball. Let me know if you need more advise, it may not be this so speck to your midwife or doctor.

im 35weeks and i have been feeling this pain since i was around 33weeks i didnt tell my doc. because i thought it was the way i was sleeping or from me walking too much. The pain mainly comes at night and/or when i am doing alot of walking. but its nice to know that it isnt anything serious and that im not the only one experiencing this pain.

Tracy - Thursday, Jun 21st
I am 23 weeks along with twins and I have been having that pain for quite a while now. It's getting alot worse now. There are times, such as today, where I can hardly walk. Dr. has told me it's normal but it hurts so bad I have a hard time believing this is normal. What can be done to alleviate it?

boricuanenna - Thursday, Jun 7th
this problem is totaly normal. I had it with my first pregnancy and i'm having it with this pregnancy also. My OB told me that with a second pregnancy is more painful. The only difference is with my son I was BIG and 7 months pregnant with this one i'm only 16 weeks and it hurts like crazy.

Martha - Monday, May 21st
I have the same problem, the only thing is that I am 22 weeks pregnant and have had that same discomfort for more than a month and I am not even big now, at first I thought it had to do with a yeast infection because I have had problems with yeast infections while pregnant, but I had three culturals and they all cambe back negative. Does anyone have any input? Please advice

Sometimes it feels as if my baby wants to come out at times it really scares me ,i wonder if this is normal.

omg i have had this pain most of my preg, it hurts so bad to even adjust myself at night. is this pain is anything like contractions, is this trainin for it?

Melanii - Monday, Mar 12th
I have that same pain but it seems like it only happens to me at night when I get relaxed and it is also in my behind on the right side

Jennifer - Tuesday, Jan 30th
30wks, carrying twins. I'm having the same pain. It hurts! Getting out of bed is the worse. I told my Dr. it felt bruised in the worse way. He said it was normal, the bones are stetching. It will go away sometime after birth. Up until my 23wk, the pain would come and go, since, it's constant.

second time around - Saturday, Jan 27th
I am going through the same thing...again. The problem with your dr.'s advise is that it's not practical or even safe for you to take tylenol all day, every day. For me the pain is throughout the entire day, and continues to get worse as my pregnancy progresses. I am thinking about getting one of the belly support belts, mabe that will help.

25weeks along - Tuesday, Jan 23rd
I've also been having pain down there. Like sore muscles. Not all the time, but It comes and goes. Mostly when I get up from my bed. It feels like I got beat down there, but I didn't!!!

Baby On Board - Saturday, Jan 20th
I had the same problem... everyone said growing pains. Until I had Blood in my Urine. Then we realized that I was Passing Kidney Stones! Like jusy being PG wasnt enough... they got to throw in KS??? WTH Im only 24 y/o Im not supposed to have KS's yet... am I?

I'm 15 weeks and have the same pain... this is my second pregnancy with my first I didn't have these until I was at least 6 months along... it's a normal pain caused by your pelvis moving apart to make room for baby. and no matter what you do it will hurt so exercise if you want. I know I went walking last night and today it's hurting a little more than it did yesterday.

Discomfort:A lot of pressure on my entire pelvic area. The right side of my vagina is more swollen than the left and hurts more. My hips and pelvic bone crack, often. Sometimes, it even feels like the baby may just fall out!! This is said to be caused by numerous pregnancies in a short period of time. (I have 3 children already and the oldest is 4)
Treatment or advice:I'm still searching for one, but my docotor says to buy a maternity support girdle. Also, soaking in the bath time gives temporary relief. Stay off your feet as often as possible!!

You can give birth. :-) You can also invest in hairdressing services, because your kid has a full head of hair. At a certain point, and especially when you're standing up, if the baby is oriented correctly, his/her head hits the inside of your cervix. If he/she turns while his/her head is in contact with your cervix, you can feel it, but it only feels like what you described if the baby has hair on his/her head. I felt this with the first boy, and he was born with a full head of hair. Didn't feel it at all with boy #2, born bald. I'm feeling it again with boy #3, so I'm gearing up for a visit to the salon in the near future. You could, if you were determined, try to coax the baby into changing positions by lying on your back, lifting your hips off the floor and patting the bottom of your tummy.

becki - Thursday, Feb 21st
i have had the same problem in that part of my groin. im 40 weeks pregnantand about 6 to 8 weeks ago i felt a click in my right pelvis area, i just put it down to the baby but on tuesday of this week i spoke to my midwife. i told her how on some days i can hardly walk with the pain and i have cryed when it has been really bad. anyway she told me it was called pelvid dysfunction, its wear the baby had turn the muscle in that area. she said you need to sit with yor legs nearly together, roll over or out of bed with your legs together and sleep with a pillow in between your legs. you also neeed to tell the mdwife when you go into labour so they dont stretch the muscle more in labour and to see a physiothearpist after birth. hope this helps i know how you all feel and it does hurt but you need to tell your midwife stright away and dont leave it lke i did x x

Discomfort:This is odd. Its seriously like the baby is kicking me in a nerve or something, and makes me jump out of my chair. I can't call it a shooting pain or anything, its just like someone is giving me a thwack from the inside. I had no clue that the baby could be hanging out that low down...I thought he was up higher...Its like he's got a foot lodged in the birth canal or something. Seriously uncool. Anyone else?

Discomfort:I can't tell exactly what it is or where it is. The pain feels like the razor/burning pain of a UTI or a tearing senseation like someone is ripping through my cervix and vagina with a brillo pad. It only lasts a few seconds at a time but it hurts! I guess it's just everything starting to stretch and dilate.
Treatment or advice:my nurse told me not to worry that it was normal. I'm 36 weeks next week so they start checking the cervix then. Hopefully I'm dilating, at least the pain will mean something.

I had different kind of pains, the ones are so intense and some times dont leave walk, go up stairs and make it worst some times when I cross the street in trafic, since Nov. I get asked to my Gp and midwife and finally in the ante-natal classes the physiotepapist bring me a name 'SPD', a lot of rest, good balance on my shoping bags, trying to no have intense rutine help me a LOT, Im only some weeks to my due day and the only thing I hope is this 'SPD' be a good pain training for birth time and help to make the birth easy. To Courtney... SPD is normal is for the excess of hormons we develope in pregnancy no all women had this condition, told your midwife and make an appointmaint with the Physioterapist, they bring some tips to make our condition EASY, but some sacrifices come with this, be patiente it's only for the pregnancy, I know at labour time is very handy and after days of the baby birth that condition goes.. so keep positive! Good Luck to everyone! Pd. excuse for my gramatical mistakes.

Discomfort:Severe discomfort in front pelvic region. Almost as if I am being stabbed. Unbearable at times to turn over in bed at night. Agony to put put weight on both feed, especially in middle of night on toilet trips.
Treatment or advice:Rest - if possible. Paracetomol (doesn't help much). Had in last 2 pregnancies - called Symphisis Pubis Disorder, now knows as PRGP Pregnancy Related Girdle Pain ( I think). Usually disappears after labour.
